Diablo 4 Infernal Hordes Guide: Unlock, Offers and Rewards

Infernal Hordes is a wave-based endgame activity in Diablo 4. Introduced in Season 5, it remains available on Seasonal and Eternal realms. This guide explains where to find an Infernal Compass, how to enter, how to choose offers and what to do with Burning Aether. Later updates added Chaos Waves and Bartuc, so the old Season 5 rules no longer tell the whole story.

Infernal Hordes Overview

Use an Infernal Compass to enter the Realm of Hatred. Defeat timed waves, collect Burning Aether and choose an Infernal Offering between waves. Each offer combines a boon with a drawback; the effects stack throughout the run. After the waves, defeat a final boss and spend the Aether you earned on Spoils. You can play alone or with a party, but limited revives make survival important.

The activity is no longer organized around the old World Tier III unlock, fixed Compass tiers or Abyssal Scroll upgrades. Current Compasses are drops. Their challenge follows your world difficulty, and the wave count can vary. Read the Compass before using it so you know what kind of run you are starting.

There is no permanent Infernal Hordes entrance you need to visit on the open-world map: the Compass is your way in. If you own Lord of Hatred and have unlocked War Plans, you can also place Infernal Hordes in an endgame activity chain. War Plans is an optional expansion system; a normal Compass run is still the core activity.

How to Unlock Infernal Hordes and Find a Compass

First complete The Eyes of the Enemy, the quest that introduces Infernal Hordes and grants an initial Compass. Blizzard says it remains on Seasonal and Eternal realms and normally needs one completion per account; Hardcore characters have separate completion. The old instruction to enter World Tier III is obsolete because the game's difficulty system changed later.

For subsequent runs, find Compasses through endgame play. The current guide lists endgame bosses, Helltides, Nightmare Dungeons and Whispers among the sources. Compasses can drop naturally on Torment difficulty. If you cannot find one, check that you finished the introductory quest, then run an eligible endgame activity. Compasses cannot be crafted at the Occultist under the later system.

Use the Compass to enter the activity. Its wave count and the difficulty you selected shape the run. The old Season 5 table of monster levels and Compass tiers should not be used to plan a current run.

How Infernal Hordes Works

During each timed wave, kill enemies and complete Aether events. Aether Fiends, Aether Lords, Soulspires and Aetheric Masses are among the ways to collect Burning Aether. Move to active events promptly, but leave yourself room to dodge hazards. Clearing many events is useful only if you survive to spend the currency.

Infernal Offerings appear before or between waves. Some create more enemies and Aether opportunities; others add a difficult hazard or boost enemy pressure. Because offers stack, a risk that feels small in an early wave can be costly near the boss. Read the in-game text and choose for your build's damage and defenses.

Chaos Waves were added after the mode launched and remain part of the activity. Their special objectives can offer more Aether, but they break the simple wave-clearing rhythm. Take them when your build and party can handle the objective. Do not rely on an old fixed list of offer values: Blizzard has reworked and rebalanced the offers since Season 5.

Best Infernal Offers to Consider

If your goal is to collect Aether, offers that generate more Hellborne or other Aether events are often attractive. The current guide rates several Hellborne options highly. The correct choice still depends on your clear speed: taking an offer that slows the run or uses up your revives can cost more than it gains.

  • Extra event spawns: Favor them when your build kills the added threats quickly enough to claim the Aether.
  • Greater enemy pressure: Accept it only if your defenses and damage can handle the stacked effect.
  • Chaos Wave choices: Read the special objective before selecting one. Their extra rewards are useful when you can finish the wave cleanly.
  • Moderate options: Use them if your current build or group needs a dependable clear more than a risky Aether ceiling.

There is no single offering that is best for every Compass. A sensible choice increases Aether while preserving a reliable path to the final boss.

Fell Council, Bartuc and Rewards

After the final wave, the traditional route leads to the Fell Council. Its members vary between runs, and an empowered Council Speaker can appear. A later permanent update added Bartuc as another final fight. Choose a route that fits your goal and that your character can complete; the Council is no longer the only possible ending.

The Fell Council remains a final encounter option.

Burning Aether is the reward currency from the run. The current guide describes equipment, materials and gold Spoils after a successful boss fight. Compare their descriptions in game before spending: the Season 5 prices and chest contents printed in older guides are no longer dependable. The old chest description mixed item categories with a Greater Affix guarantee; do not treat that launch-era reward line as current.

Pick equipment if you need a gear chance, materials if you need upgrade resources, or Spoils of Gold if you want to convert Aether into gold. The best use of Aether depends on your character's needs and the amount collected. The Diablo 4 Gold service is another option already linked from this guide.

If you are deciding between the Council and Bartuc, check the encounter choice and its Aether requirement before committing. Save enough currency for the reward you want, and remember that the run only pays out if you finish the chosen fight. This makes reliable damage and survival part of any farming plan.

Conclusion

Complete the introductory quest if needed, find an Infernal Compass, clear waves, choose offers you can survive and spend your Aether after the final fight. Infernal Hordes remains an endgame option, but the launch-era World Tier, Compass-crafting and chest-cost instructions are obsolete. If you need help with the activity, consider the Diablo 4 Infernal Hordes Boost.
