WoW Midnight Expansion Classes
Midnight is live, and its class choices differ from the early previews of the expansion. The Haranir are an unlockable allied race with nine available classes. Demon Hunters gained the Void-themed Devourer specialization, and Void Elves can become Demon Hunters after a short questline. Blizzard also revised combat design across existing classes and added Apex Talents. This guide separates those changes so you can choose the character you actually want to play.
Blizzard's Midnight launch overview confirms the live feature set. The Haranir allied race guide lists the playable classes and unlock route. Midnight did not add a wholly new class in the way the Demon Hunter or Evoker entered the game; its new class gameplay centers on the Devourer specialization and new race/class combinations.

A race gives your character an appearance, story and racial options; a class determines its main combat toolkit. A specialization is a combat path within a class. That distinction matters here: Haranir Druids and Haranir Mages are both Haranir characters but play very differently, while a Devourer and a Havoc Demon Hunter share a class but use different specializations.
Haranir: classes and factions
The Haranir can join either Horde or Alliance. Blizzard lists the following available classes: Druid, Hunter, Mage, Monk, Priest, Rogue, Shaman, Warlock and Warrior. They cannot be chosen as every WoW class; for example, Paladin, Death Knight, Demon Hunter and Evoker are absent from the official Haranir list. If one of those is your preferred class, choose a different compatible race.
Haranir come from Harandar, a fungal jungle among the roots of the World Trees. Blizzard describes them as reclusive guardians of the rootways led by a council of elders. Orweyna connects players to their story, but she is not described in the official overview as the sole leader of the people. The earlier article's references to “Radiant Song adepts” and a fixed leadership structure were speculative and have been removed.
Blizzard's current guide confirms an Ivory Grimlynx mount and bioluminescent face and body paint among the race's presentation. The earlier preview speculated about racial traits, giant Quill Bat transformations and unannounced Heritage Armor from datamining. Those points should not be treated as confirmed gameplay features. How to unlock the Haranir
Begin Midnight's story in Silvermoon City and complete the Harandar zone level-up campaign. Blizzard's launch instructions say that this campaign grants access to the Haranir. The allied race overview describes the process as earning their trust through the Midnight campaign. This is a defined live route, not a guess based on the earlier Earthen unlock.
- Start the Midnight questline in Silvermoon City on a character that can play the expansion.
- Follow the Harandar campaign through its zone story. Blizzard's Harandar overview says it becomes one of the paths offered after Eversong Woods.
- Complete the allied-race unlock as directed by the campaign, then check character creation for the Haranir option.
If the option is missing, check your campaign progress before looking for an unrelated achievement. The available class list is the same official list for both factions. Choose the class based on the role you want to play, not only the look of the race.
Which Haranir class should you choose?
If you want shapeshifting and a choice of combat or healing roles, Druid is the natural match. Hunter offers a pet-centered ranged path; Mage and Warlock are ranged spellcasters with different toolkits; Priest and Shaman include healing options; Monk can fill several roles; Rogue and Warrior emphasize physical combat. These are broad class identities, not a claim that a Haranir racial trait makes one class the strongest.
Your preferred role narrows the choice faster than a tier list. A player who wants to tank should first compare the tank specializations available through Druid, Monk or Warrior. A player who wants to heal can compare Druid, Monk, Priest or Shaman. If you mainly want a ranged damage character, Hunter, Mage, Priest, Shaman and Warlock have relevant options. Read the current specialization descriptions in the game; balance changes regularly, especially across a live season.
Devourer: the new Demon Hunter specialization
Devourer is a Void-themed, ranged Demon Hunter specialization. Blizzard's Midnight reveal introduced it as a way to harness Void power with ranged abilities. It belongs to the existing Demon Hunter class, so you do not select “Devourer” as a separate class on the character creation screen. Choose a Demon Hunter, then select the specialization when its options are available.
The official State of Azeroth recap confirms the Devourer specialization was introduced in the pre-expansion update. Midnight later expanded each class through combat design changes and Apex Talents, described in the content update notes. This makes an old pre-Midnight rotation or talent screenshot a poor substitute for the current in-game tree.
Devourer adds another damage playstyle to Demon Hunter; it does not give the Haranir access to Demon Hunter. Haranir are not on the official Demon Hunter race list. If Void-themed Demon Hunter gameplay is your goal, check the races that can make one rather than trying to unlock it through the Haranir campaign.
Void Elf Demon Hunters
Midnight also introduced Void Elf Demon Hunters as a race/class combination. Blizzard says they are unlocked through a short questline. That is a different task from unlocking the Haranir. If you already play a Demon Hunter or want to begin one with a Void Elf appearance, complete the relevant quest and check the character creation options.
A Void Elf Demon Hunter can use the class's available specializations, including Devourer. The term “Void Elf Demon Hunter” describes a race and class pairing; “Devourer” describes the specialization. This distinction is easy to lose in headlines about “new classes” but makes the unlock path much clearer.
What about the other classes?
Blizzard says every WoW class received major combat design updates in Midnight, and the expansion added Apex Talents within specializations. These changes affect the feel of existing characters too. You do not have to reroll to experience the expansion's class work. Open your current class's talent tree and check current official notes or in-game tooltips for the abilities you use.
The old article focused almost entirely on Haranir and treated datamined character art as the main class news. The live class story is broader: one new allied race, one new Demon Hunter specialization, a Void Elf Demon Hunter option and revisions across the existing roster.
