WoW Earthen Allied Race: Unlock, Traits, Classes, and Rewards
The Earthen are a playable allied race from The War Within. These titan-forged people of Khaz Algar can join either the Alliance or the Horde. If you are returning in Midnight, you can still unlock them through the relevant War Within campaign and Earthen storylines. This guide covers those requirements, their racial traits, class choices, customization, mount, and Heritage Armor.

Lore and Appearance of the Earthen Race
The playable Earthen are a titan-forged society from Khaz Algar. Their story follows their efforts to move beyond the edicts that shaped their lives. They have stone bodies, gem details, and distinctive beards and skin colors. Your faction choice is made when creating an Earthen character; the race itself is available to both factions.
The War Within introduced their home city of Dornogal and the stories needed to recruit them. Midnight is now the current expansion, but the Earthen unlock still follows the earlier campaign rather than the Haranir campaign in Midnight.
How to Unlock the Earthen Allied Race
Complete the War Within campaign storylines and the Earthen side stories. The Allied Races: Earthen achievement is the clearest checklist: it tracks the campaign, Broken Tools, Mourning Rise, and Merrix and Steelvein. Blizzard's Earthen overview also names the quests and characters behind these stories.
The War Within Campaign
Work through the campaign chapters in Khaz Algar, including Against the Current, News from Below, A Light in the Dark, Ties That Bind, and The Machines March to War. Some returning players may need to continue earlier War Within chapters even after using a catch-up path. If a required story does not appear, check your campaign progress and the achievement criteria in game.
Earthen Side Stories
- Broken Tools: Help Machinist Kittrin in the Ringing Deeps; the storyline ends with Reforged Purpose.
- Merrix and Steelvein: Follow the Dornogal political storyline and complete Bad Business. The old link in this guide pointed to an unrelated quest.
- Mourning Rise: Follow Urtago and Korgran's story on the Isle of Dorn through As He Departs and The Weight of Duty.
These are completed questlines, not upcoming release events. Once the required achievement is earned, you can create an Earthen character and choose Alliance or Horde. The race starts at level 10 in Dornogal.
Racial Traits of the Earthen
Earthen traits combine combat utility, gathering, food replacement, armor, and exploration experience. Their effects can be tuned by later patches, so check the live spell tooltip for exact combat values.
- Azerite Surge: An empowered cone attack that deals Fire damage. Further empowerment can heal allies hit and add damage to a target.
- Hyper Productive: Increases Finesse when gathering, helping you gain additional materials.
- Ingest Minerals: Earthen are always Well Fed but cannot eat ordinary food. Consuming a suitable Khaz Algar gem changes the bonus: Amber for Stamina, Emerald for Haste, Onyx for Mastery, Ruby for Critical Strike, or Sapphire for Versatility.
- Titan-Wrought Frame: Improves armor from equipped items.
- Wide-Eyed Wonder: Increases experience earned from discovering locations.
Earthen also have Quiet Contemplation, which restores health and mana while seated. This is useful because they cannot consume normal food. The old article omitted it and described some spell effects with outdated or unsupported figures.
Playable Classes
Earthen can be Hunters, Mages, Monks, Paladins, Priests, Rogues, Shamans, Warlocks, or Warriors. Check the character-creation screen if you are choosing a class after a later patch. The Earthen Hunter begins with a Proto Ram pet.
Earthen Customization
Earthen appearance choices include skin colors, gem encrustations, hairstyles, facial features, eyes, and beards for different body types. You can change many of these choices later at a Barber Shop. The options are visual customization, not a separate unlock requirement.
To see how a color or gem arrangement works with your intended armor, use the in-game character creator or Barber Shop. The race's stone and crystal details can look different under various armor pieces and lighting.
Allied Race Earthen Mount
The Slatestone Ramolith is awarded with the Allied Races: Earthen unlock. Blizzard says the mount is account-wide and usable by other races. It is tied to recruiting the Earthen, not to the separate Heritage Armor achievement.
Earthen Heritage Armor Sets
Level a newly created Earthen character to 50 to earn Heritage of the Earthen and its armor appearances. The set is cosmetic and can be transmogrified by Earthen characters. It is distinct from the Slatestone Ramolith, which comes from unlocking the race.
The old version of this guide listed extra boost, race-change, faction-change, and Recruit a Friend restrictions without a current Earthen-specific source. Check the achievement's in-game wording before using those services on a character whose Heritage Armor progress matters to you.
Final Thoughts
The Earthen remain a playable choice in World of Warcraft. For the unlock, focus on the War Within campaign and the three Earthen storylines, then track Allied Races: Earthen in your achievement panel. Once recruited, you can create an Earthen character, choose your faction and class, and work toward its Heritage Armor.
