COD Ghost - Character Review

Simon “Ghost” Riley is perhaps the most popular character from Call of Duty today. Call of Duty is a game series created by Infinity Ward and published by Activision. At different times, the main games in the Call of Duty series have been developed by Infinity Ward, Treyarch, Sledgehammer Games, Raven Software, and Neversoft. Before the reboot, the most popular character from the Call of Duty series was Captain Price. However, after the reboot with record sales, memes, and TikToks, Ghost has become the most popular character in COD. That’s why we want to tell the history of Ghost, both before and after the reboot.

Appearance of Ghost

Ghost is a lieutenant of the British special forces and a part of Task Force 141. Task Force 141 is a multinational special operations unit that appears in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, Modern Warfare 2: Ghost, Find Makarov: Operation Kingfish, Soap's Journal, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare (reference), Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered , and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remastered . Since the plot revolves around this group, Ghost appears in most of COD MW games.

Old Origin of COD Ghost

Activision tells the origin of COD Ghost not in the COD MW series but in a comic book before adding him to the game series. Ghost was born in Manchester, and his childhood was very traumatic because Simon’s father was abusive, torturing him by forcing him to kiss snakes and laugh at a dead prostitute who had overdosed. Simon has a younger brother, Tommy, who often wore a skull mask to scare Simon. When Simon grew up, he joined the British SAS (Special Air Service). On one of the missions, Simon was sent after Manuel Roba, a big Mexican boss of a drug cartel. However, during the mission, Major Vernon, his commander, betrayed the entire squad, leading to their capture. Riley and his team were tortured physically (such as being hung on hooks and beaten) and psychologically (such as being given a skull and told it was his mother's before being buried alive with a dead body).

Vernon couldn't break Simon, and Roba killed Vernon for his failure, then buried Simon with Vernon's dead body in one casket. Simon broke out of the casket using a jawbone and escaped across the border to Texas. Four months later, he met up with his teammates from that mission, only to find out they had been brainwashed by Roba. He tried to kill one of them but was forced to flee. When Simon returned home, he found his entire family dead (including his mother, brother Tommy, and Tommy’s family). After this, Simon ceased to exist and became Ghost, driven by anger to kill his former comrades and seek revenge on Roba. Upon arriving in Mexico, Simon tortured Gilberto(right hand of Roba) for information about Roba and his location, killed all the guards at Roba's mansion, killed Roba, and burned the mansion down. At this point, General Shepard from Task Force 141 recruited Ghost. The comic ends here, with one more mission involving hostages in Ukraine, but this mission is only to explain the origin of Ghost. The comic frequently shows skulls to symbolize how skulls haunt Ghost's life, explaining why he uses a skull on his mask. After that, Ghost had more missions with Task Force 141, leading to his appearance in the COD MW series.

Appearance of Ghost After the Reboot

The same as the old COD Ghost, Lieutenant Simon Riley appears in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III, Call of Duty: Warzone, and Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0. In the first COD MW, he appears as a teaser for the next COD MW II to please old fans of the COD series.

Reboot Origin of COD Ghost

In the reboot, Simon "Ghost" Riley has nothing to do with the comic. In the new origin, COD Ghost was born in Manchester and joined the Special Air Service, similar to the old origin. The new origin reveals nothing about his childhood, and his joining Task Force 141 is part of the game story. COD Ghost wears his skull mask to maintain anonymity, and nothing is revealed about his life. This indicates that in the reboot, Activision does not use the comic's origin. While we knew Ghost's face from the start in the old COD MW, the new Ghost hides his face even from Task Force 141. Interestingly, Ghost worked in the same military department as Mace(operator form MW I and MW II), who also has the same skull on his mask.
