Diablo 4 Infernal Hordes Overview
In this new mode, as the name suggests, you’ll be defending yourself against hordes of enemies. These hordes will attack in waves, ending with a boss fight. Although Infernal Hordes is considered endgame content, it can be accessed right after entering World Tier 3.
The difficulty in Infernal Hordes is similar to Nightmare Dungeons, as players can increase the challenge using the Infernal Compass and Abyssal Scrolls. Infernal Compass farming can be made easier with a Diablo 4 Infernal Compass Boost. Additionally, each run has a limited number of revivals. The difficulty is divided into tiers, from Tier 1 (the easiest) to Tier 8, which is currently the hardest level. Mid-season, Tiers 9 and 10 will be added. In Tier 1, the monsters are level 60, and their levels increase by 20 with each tier, while the number of revivals decreases. The number of waves also depends on the tier.
Tier | Monster Level | Revives Available | Waves |
---|---|---|---|
1 | 60 | 8 | 5 |
2 | 80 | 5 | 5 |
3 | 100 | 3 | 5 |
4 | 120 | 3 | 6 |
5 | 140 | 3 | 7 |
6 | 160 | 2 | 8 |
7 | 180 | 2 | 9 |
8 | 200 | 2 | 10 |
Waves last 60 seconds, and you don’t need to kill all the demons in a wave; surviving while completing events will trigger the next wave, bringing new demons. Killing demons earns you Burning Aether, which you’ll need to purchase Spoils of Hell chests. If you defeat all demons before the timer ends, the next wave will start immediately.
How to Unlock the Infernal Hordes
To unlock Diablo 4 Infernal Hordes, you must enter World Tier 3 and receive a quest called The Eyes of the Enemy. At the end of this quest, you’ll obtain your first Infernal Compass, which is necessary to open a portal to the Gates of Hell, where the new mode is located. Note that the level of the Infernal Compass depends on the player's World Tier.

Infernal Compass can be crafted by the Occultist using Sigil Powder and Forgotten Soul, or they can be found in the world. In addition to crafting, Infernal Compass can also be upgraded using Abyssal Scrolls. Abyssal Scrolls can be farmed within the Infernal Hordes or obtained using the Diablo 4 Abyssal Scrolls Boost.
Diablo 4 Infernal Hordes Gameplay
The primary resource in Infernal Hordes is Burning Aether, which is essential for obtaining the top rewards in Season 5. The main source of Burning Aether comes from Aether Events, and to ease your way through the waves, you’ll be given a choice of three Infernal Offers at the end of each wave. Each Infernal Offer has both a positive (boon) and a negative (bane) effect. Since Infernal Offers can repeat, positive and negative effects will stack, creating a unique build for each run. Aether Events occur during waves and spawn in the four corners of the arena, marked as red dots on the map. Once they appear, a hidden timer starts, and if you don’t activate the Aether Event in time, it will disappear. Burning Aether is marked by blue dots on the map for easier collection, and pets will automatically pick it up. To activate an Aether Event, simply enter its invisible radius, and it will automatically trigger. To avoid missing Aether Events, we recommend staying close to the corners of the arena.
Aether Events:
- Aetheric Mass — Destroy the Aetheric Mass to gain Aether. The bloody mass puts out damage in cones, and stays stationary, the whole time. This event is triggered by player proximity, is easily destroyed, and initially drops 1 Aether after being destroyed.
- Soulspire — You have to slay enemies within the Spire's ring to destroy it. Initially drops 1 Aether after being destroyed.
- Aether Fiend — The Desecrator of Tormenter. powerful demons that emerge in any of the four corners of the Abyssal Verge. Drop 1 Aether after being destroyed.
- Hellborne — Hellborne spawn in groups of three at random near the player's location. Initially, each one drops 1 Aether each after being destroyed.
- Aether Lord — Aether Lord function similarly to Dungeon boss, with a bigger HP bar as well as a stagger bar. Have specific movesets and spawn at random. Drop 3 Aether when defeated.
- Infernal Demon — The Burning Butcher comes from The Stalking Devil Infernal Offer, and can only be summoned once per wave. Drops 25 Aether when defeated.
