The old list treated Magicka and Stamina versions of every class as fixed, separate tiers and named Nightblade the universal damage winner without a reproducible comparison. That approach no longer reflects subclassing or Class Mastery. The recommendations below are starting points based on current live systems and observed build examples, not claims that one class always wins.
How to Read the ESO PvE Shortlist
Trial DPS shortlist means a class or skill-line combination worth testing for an organized damage role. Flexible group pick means a build with a useful balance of damage, sustain and team tools. Solo-friendly pick means a build that can combine damage with its own healing or defense. These are recommendations by use case, not a universal S-to-C ranking of every class.
For any comparison, specify the patch, encounter, role, group buffs, gear and whether subclassing is used. A target-dummy number answers a different question from a trial boss log. Public logs show what skilled players brought to particular fights; they do not prove that every player or every group will reproduce the same result.
The live game also has two distinct build paths. Subclassing can replace up to two native class skill lines with eligible lines from other classes. Class Mastery grants passive options to eligible characters using their native lines and not actively subclassing. A tier list that ignores that choice is ranking incomplete builds.

Public trial samples show Necromancer, Arcanist and Nightblade combinations on different encounters. The leading setup changes with the boss and with the skill lines and gear selected. A subclassed character may use only part of its original class toolkit, so the starting class alone is too broad to predict the result.
Before copying a parse, look at the actual boss, gear, skill lines and group buffs. Try the rotation on a target dummy to learn it, then review performance in the dungeon or trial you intend to play. If the build loses damage while moving or handling mechanics, change the setup rather than assuming the class is low tier.
Dungeon and Solo PvE Picks
Four-player dungeons reward reliable damage, interrupts, survival and enough healing or shielding to recover from mistakes. Arcanist is a useful starting point for players who like a clear Crux-to-Fatecarver loop; Sorcerer offers established ranged group builds and pet-based options. These are playstyle suggestions, not proof that one class deals more damage in every dungeon.
Solo content shifts the priorities. You need to stay alive without assuming a dedicated healer, so compare self-healing, shields, mobility and resource sustain alongside damage. An Arcanist solo build can combine its beam with defensive skills; a Sorcerer can adapt a group build by trading some damage for survival. Other classes can also clear solo content with suitable gear and practice.
For a new character, choose a rotation you can repeat under pressure. Test it in ordinary dungeons and a solo arena before farming a full endgame set. When a group already provides strong buffs and heals, you can replace some personal survival choices with damage or support. A class with an attractive dummy result is only a good pick if its play pattern fits your content.
Subclassing, Class Mastery and Gear
Subclassing expands the possible combinations, while Class Mastery supports characters that stay with their native class lines. Gear matters, but it does not turn an unsupported global ranking into a fact. Compare a candidate setup with your current sets, available Champion Points and the buffs your group already supplies. Use a recent build as a starting sheet, then check its patch and test it against the content you play. Do not assume a trial parse can be reproduced in a solo arena or a four-player dungeon.
