The Tree of Whispers in the Hawezar swamp in Diablo 4, its twisted branches hung with heads on ropes above candlelit roots

Updated: October 6, 2026

Diablo 4 Tree of Whispers Guide: Location, Grim Favors and Caches

The Tree of Whispers is the reward loop you can run any time in Diablo 4. Whispers pop up all over the map, each one pays some Grim Favors, and once you have 10 you cash them in for a Whisper Cache of your choice. Below: where the Tree is, what opens it, how to fill the 10 Favors fast and which cache to take right now.

Tree of Whispers at a glance

  • Where: northeast Hawezar, with its own waypoint right next to it.
  • What you do: finish Whispers marked on the world map. Each one shows how many Grim Favors it is worth.
  • The goal: 10 Grim Favors buy one Whisper Cache.
  • What you get: you pick the cache: gear for one slot, Gold, gems, crafting materials or keys, plus a burst of experience.
  • Cost: nothing but time. Every Whisper also hands out experience and Gold on the spot.

Where to find the Tree of Whispers

The Tree grows in the swamps of Hawezar, in the northeast corner of the region. On the world map it is the skull with red branches. A waypoint sits right beside it, so once you have it, a return trip is one teleport.

The red skull icon is the Tree, the blue marker to its left is the waypoint. Hover the icon to see your Grim Favors. In-game screenshot

You only hand in Favors at the Tree. The Whispers that earn them are spread over every region of Sanctuary. Blizzard also names Ravens as a place to turn Whispers in, but we haven't confirmed where each one sits, so the Tree waypoint is the sure route.

How to unlock Whispers

If you play through the main campaign, you meet the Tree in its final act, and the repeatable Whisper rewards open once the story is done. From then on, Whisper markers show up on your map.

If you skipped the campaign on a new character, open the world map. If you see the Tree icon and Whisper markers across the regions, you're set. If they're missing, the character's campaign progress is the first thing to look at. We haven't tested how a campaign skip treats the Tree on a fresh Season 15 account, or whether every realm shares the unlock, so trust what your own map shows.

Whispers and Grim Favors

A Whisper is a small task at a marked spot. Finish it and you get experience, Gold and its Grim Favors right away. The map shows each Whisper's Favor value before you travel, and the set of Whispers rotates over time, so check the map again whenever you come back. These are the kinds you'll meet most:

Whisper type What you do Good to know
Dungeon Clear the marked dungeon to its end Pays off best when you wanted that dungeon anyway
Event Finish a local or world event at the marker Several events close together chain well
Hunt Track down and kill the marked enemies Quick if your build clears packs fast
Helltide Whispers Tasks inside an active Helltide One Helltide zone is set up to cover all 10 Favors
PvP Tasks in the PvP zone Optional. Other Whispers fill the counter just as well.

There's no fixed route. Favors from any type count toward the same 10, so grab the ones on your way. While a Helltide is up, it is the easiest place to fill the whole counter in one area, and you collect Helltide loot at the same time.

With Lord of Hatred, War Plans work the same way: Whispers sit next to the activities you planned, so a dungeon or Helltide you were doing for the plan can pay Favors too. You don't need the expansion for Whispers themselves.

Whisper achievements and their titles are a side goal. They don't change what you need for a cache, so chase them only if you like collecting titles.

Which Whisper Cache to pick

Hand in 10 Grim Favors and you choose one cache from the ones on offer. The choices can differ from turn-in to turn-in, so read them before you click. Here is what each kind brings in Season 15:

Cache What's inside Take it when
Gear cache (weapons, armor, jewelry) Items for the slot in its name. A Unique or Mythic can drop, but only by chance. One slot of your build is still weak
Gold Cache Gold. Blizzard puts it at around 100 million on Torment XII. Rerolls, Masterworking and repairs are draining your Gold
Gem Cache Gem Fragments and one Royal or Grand Gem, depending on difficulty You still need gems for your sockets
Cube Materials Cache Materials for Horadric Cube recipes You craft at the Cube (Lord of Hatred)
Salvage Cache Salvage materials, with extra Forgotten Souls on higher Torment Upgrades are stuck on materials or Forgotten Souls
Keys Cache Random Tributes and Sigil Dust, plus a small chance at a Mephisto Key or a Trace of Echoes You run the Undercity or Nightmare Dungeons a lot

Every cache also drops 4 to 6 Experience Orbs, plus 2 to 4 more on Torment X and above, so Whispers help while you level whatever cache you picked.

A gear cache only picks the slot. The ring cache gets you rings, but which ring, and whether it is a Unique or Mythic, is still luck.

Season 15 extras

  • Splinters of Evil: Blizzard says all three Splinters (Terror, Destruction and Hatred) change the Tree of Whispers. Read your Splinter's description to see what yours adds.
  • Prime Evil ambushes: with a Splinter active, every finished Whisper can call an Echo of a Prime Evil, and Whispers worth more Grim Favors roll better. More on Whispers that spawn Prime Evil ambushes.
  • Urn of Ancestral Whispers: this seasonal blessing raises the chance that an Ancestral Cache appears when you turn in Whispers.
  • Both belong to Season 15 and leave with it. The basic loop above stays.

When something doesn't work

What you see What it means What to do
No Whisper markers on the map This character hasn't unlocked Whisper rewards yet Check the character's campaign progress
The Whisper you wanted is gone Whispers rotate Pick another one nearby, the Favors count the same
10 Favors, but no cache to pick A game fault, not a step you missed Try again later and report it to Blizzard. Don't delete or restart your character over it.

Caches faster

  • Open the map and add up the Favor values near you before you pick a direction.
  • While a Helltide is active, one zone can cover the whole counter.
  • At 8 or 9 Favors, a small Whisper next door often beats a big one across the region once you count the ride.
  • Play on Torment X or higher once you can, for the extra Experience Orbs in every cache.
  • Pick for your bottleneck: short on Gold, take the Gold Cache; still on a bad amulet, take the amulet cache.

Quick plan for a Whisper run

  1. Open the world map and find Whispers near what you wanted to play anyway.
  2. Add up their Favors until you reach 10. Use a Helltide if one is running.
  3. Finish them and collect the experience and Gold each one pays.
  4. Teleport to the Tree waypoint in Hawezar.
  5. Pick the cache that fixes your current weak spot.
  6. Repeat with the next set of Whispers.

Conclusion

Ten Favors mostly come from things you'd do anyway, and the hand-in is one teleport away. If you pick each cache by what holds your character back right now, Whispers keep feeding you Gold, gems, materials and gear between your other activities.

FAQ

In the northeast of Hawezar. On the world map it is the skull with red branches, and a waypoint right next to it takes you back with one teleport.

Play the main campaign: you reach the Tree in its final act, and Whisper rewards open once the story is done. If you skipped the campaign, open the world map. Whisper markers and the Tree icon mean you're set; if they're missing, check that character's campaign progress.

10. Each Whisper shows its Favor value on the map, and Favors from every type of Whisper count toward the same 10.

Use an active Helltide: one Helltide zone can cover all 10 Favors. Otherwise, add up the Whispers near you on the map and pick the ones on your way. Close to 10, a small nearby Whisper often beats a big one far away.

The one that fixes your current bottleneck. Gear caches give items for the slot in their name, the Gold Cache gives around 100 million Gold on Torment XII, and there are caches for gems, Horadric Cube materials, salvage materials and keys.

Yes. Every cache drops 4 to 6 Experience Orbs, plus 2 to 4 more on Torment X and above. Each Whisper you finish also pays experience and Gold on the spot.

No. PvP Whispers are optional. Dungeons, events, hunts and Helltide Whispers fill the counter just as well.

Blizzard names Ravens as a turn-in point next to the Tree. We haven't confirmed where each Raven is, so the Tree waypoint in Hawezar is the sure route.
