Heroic mode: Trial of the Grand Crusader Raid Guide
In this mode, the bosses are harder, and better gear drops with higher item type levels (258 ilvl in 25-player and 245 ilvl in 10-player). And in this raid, you have 50 attempts to defeat the tough bosses. If you run out of attempts, you'll have to wait for the next lockout period.
After defeating the final boss, Anub'arak, you'll get the Argent Crusade Tribute Chest with fantastic loot. The number of attempts you use determines the loot's generosity.
Rewards await the victorious:
- If you win within 25 attempts or less, you get extra gear from the Argent Crusade Tribute Chest.
- If it takes you 26 attempts or more, you still get rewarded with the Trophy of the Crusade and a Crusader Orb in the chest.
- The most skilled teams that win on their first try are rewarded with a guaranteed mount drop in the Argent Crusade Tribute Chest.
Feats of Strength make the Trial of the Grand Crusader even more exciting and challenging in Wrath of the Lich King Classic. They're special achievements that are extremely difficult and bring honor to those who achieve them.
Achievements | How to get |
---|---|
A Tribute to Immortality | To earn it, a raid group must complete the raid with all members surviving in 25-player mode. The reward is a stunning mount, either the Crusader's White Warhorse or the Crusader's Black Warhorse. |
A Tribute to Skill | Requires completing the raid with at least 25 attempts remaining in 10-player or 25-player mode, showcasing the team's skill. |
A Tribute to Mad Skill | Is even harder, with 45 attempts remaining, demonstrating exceptional skill and finesse. |
A Tribute to Insanity | Demands 50 attempts remaining in 10-player or 25-player mode, an awe-inspiring achievement. |
A Tribute to Dedicated Insanity | Needs both "A Tribute to Insanity" and 50 attempts remaining in 10-player or 25-player mode, a challenge only the most committed and skilled adventurers can conquer. |
Argent Crusade Tribute Chest in Trial of the Grand Crusader
After a tough battle and defeating the final boss, Anub'arak, the Argent Crusade Tribute Chest appears, holding rewards for victorious players in both 10- and 25-person modes in WotLK Classic. What's cool is that the treasures inside are influenced by the difficulty, faction, and remaining attempts when you win.
You start with 50 attempts, and each time you face a challenge, like wiping, you lose one attempt. Managing these attempts adds strategy to the raid.
The rewards aren't just from one loot table. They depend on the number of attempts it took to win and potential rewards from additional attempts. Winning with just one attempt unlocks all potential rewards.
Using multiple attempts to fine-tune your approach can also get you extra loot. Each attempt adds to the loot pool, rewarding your dedication.
Every choice and attempt counts in the Trial of the Grand Crusader. Balancing attempts and rewards is key.

Trial of the Crusader Raid Strategy Guide
Prepare for the Trial of the Crusader, where you'll face 5 tough boss encounters that will test your skills to the max. But here's the exciting part – the foes you'll fight depend on your faction!
For the Horde champions, get ready to battle the Champions of the Horde. These strong opponents represent the Horde's power, and only the bravest warriors can win.
On the other side, the Champions of the Alliance await. They're eager to face daring heroes from the Alliance. Fight against these elite foes and prove yourself as a champion of the light.
Bosses:
- Anub'arak
- Lord Jaraxxus
- Northrend Beasts
- Twin Val'kyr: Fjola & Eydis
- Faction Champions: Champions of the Alliance and Champions of the Horde
Alright, let's take a look at each boss one by one.
Faction Champions: Champions of the Alliance and Champions of the Horde
To beat this tough challenge, your raid group needs to be flexible like a sneaky rogue and work together like a disciplined army.
You don't have to have tanks, but having a couple of tough Protection Warriors can be really helpful. They have talents that can stun and disarm the enemy champions, giving your raid a better chance.
The Champions will focus on attacking players with low health, so in the raid needs to keep those players safe. The melee Champions should be slowed and rooted often to limit their movement. The Champions can also use crowd control on your healers, so the raid needs to quickly dispel those effects to protect them.
The healing Champions can turn the battle in their favor, so it's important to control them first before dealing with the other foes. Using mass area-of-effect (AoE) attacks won't work well because the Champions have a passive 75% damage reduction from AoE attacks. You need to use clever tactics and focus on specific targets to win.
In this unique encounter, PvP dual-spec setups are helpful, with crowd control, healing reduction, or self-protection options. But PvP gear doesn't matter here since the Champions are still NPCs.
This battle is fast-paced and dynamic, with shorter crowd control durations, like in PvP fights. Coordination between different classes with crowd control abilities is essential to keep the enemy in check.
The lineup of Champions changes every week, creating new challenges. There's no one-size-fits-all strategy, but we offer general guidelines to help you create a plan based on your raid's setup. With the right strategy, you'll emerge victorious in the Faction Champions encounter!
Northrend Beasts
First, you'll face Gormok the Impaler, and you need to beat him in 3 minutes to avoid additional enemies. His Impale attack is dangerous, so it's good to have 3 tanks taking turns to distract him. Watch out for Snobold Vassals throwing Fire Bombs that hurt over time - ranged players should dodge them.
Next, there are two Jormungars, and their Slime Pools now cover a larger area and deal more damage. You need good coordination, with two tanks on the moving Jormungar and one tank on the stationary one. The raid should spread out and be quick to react to their abilities. If your damage output is low, focus on killing Acidmaw first and rely on strong healing to handle Dreadscale's enrage. Using Bloodlust/Heroism during this phase can be a big help.
Finally, you'll face Icehowl, who no longer gives you time to prepare before using Trample, making it harder to avoid. But staying alert and moving away from his path will lead you to victory. Just be careful, as Frothing Rage can't be removed anymore.
As the battle goes on, coordination, quick reflexes, and adaptability are vital. Keep an eye on the time, watch out for the fiery dangers, and work together to conquer the Trial of the Crusader's tough bosses!
Lord Jaraxxus
Welcome to the more challenging Heroic version of the Lord Jaraxxus encounter! Get ready for chaos, as this battle has some tough changes that require quick thinking and teamwork.
The Nether Portal and Infernal Volcano will keep summoning more enemies until you defeat them. You need to take down these reinforcements fast, or they'll overwhelm you.
Watch out for the Mistress of Pain, who sometimes casts a spell that damages and interrupts the next spell you try to cast within 8 seconds. If you're a spellcaster, have a different spell ready to use when this happens, so you can keep dealing damage or healing.
Felflame Infernals can't be controlled or interrupted. When they use their area-of-effect ability, quickly move away to avoid getting hurt. If you don't, it can be really bad for your team.
Even though it's tougher, a well-coordinated group can handle this encounter. Focus on killing the adds as they come, manage interrupted spells well, and be fast in avoiding the Felflame Infernals' damaging attack.
Get ready for a fiery challenge and rely on your raid members' teamwork to win the Heroic Lord Jaraxxus encounter. Adaptability and determination are your best friends in this intense fight!
Twin Val'kyr: Fjola & Eydis
Get ready to face a stronger version of Concentrated Light and Concentrated Darkness in the Heroic Twin Val'kyr encounter. The Twin Val'kyr themselves also have new tricks - they'll use Touch of Light and Touch of Darkness on players.
To win this fight, you need careful planning. Assign players to specific roles on each side, matching the color of the respective boss. It's a good idea to have a mobile healer, like a druid, as the "ball collector". Their job is to quickly gather the concentrated essences that could be dangerous for their side.
Fjola now has Touch of Light, and Eydis has Touch of Darkness. When players are targeted by these abilities, they deal damage to nearby allies, like XT's Searing Light ability. To reduce this danger, the affected player must temporarily switch their essence color to the opposite one, neutralizing the harmful effects, before going back to their original color.
By coordinating these strategies and adapting to the Twin Val'kyr's new abilities, you'll win this challenging encounter. Embrace the challenge, learn the mechanics, and let your raid shine brightly against the darkness!
Anub'arak
Epic battle with Anub'arak, divided into three exciting phases:
- Emerged Phase 1: Starts the encounter and lasts for 80 intense seconds. Anub'arak will be standing tall and facing your raid directly, showing off his strength.
- The Submerged Phase 2: Comes next, giving you and your allies a short 65-second break as Anub'arak goes underground. Use this time to regroup, plan, and get ready for the next part. These two phases keep alternating until Anub'arak's health drops to a critical 30% HP, which triggers the final and most thrilling Phase 3.
- In Phase 3: Anub'arak decides to stay above ground for good as his health reaches 30%. No more going underground - it's now a relentless fight to the end.
Let's go through each phase!
Phase 1 - Emerged Phase
For 80 seconds, Anub'arak will be above ground, facing your raid. It's your chance to show your strength and unleash your powerful attacks on this tough enemy.
Positioning is important during this phase. You'll want to keep Anub'arak in the deeper part of his cave to make it easier when he goes underground later.
Anub'arak's melee attacks are strong, similar to Algalon the Observer before he was made easier. But Anub'arak uses a single weapon, making it a bit easier to handle the damage. Still, healers need to be careful, as tank damage can catch them off guard, especially if they've recently fought Lord Jaraxxus and the Twin Val'kyr.
Watch out for Anub'arak's Freezing Slash every 20-30 seconds. It deals around 20k frost damage and stuns the tank for 3 seconds. This debuff makes the tank vulnerable to more damage.
Anub'arak also uses Penetrating Cold, targeting two random players (five in heroic difficulty) every 20 seconds. It deals 3500 Frost damage every 3 seconds (6000 in heroic difficulty), adding up to 21k damage (36k in heroic) over time. Healers need to watch for these debuffs and heal those affected, especially in the last phase. Some classes can use their immunities like Cloak of Shadows, Ice Block, and Divine Shield to reduce the effects of Penetrating Cold.
As if that's not enough, every 45 seconds, Anub'arak summons 2 Nerubian Burrowers (4 in heroic difficulty) to join the fight, making it even tougher.
Phase 2 The Submerged Phase
Phase 2 is the critical moment in the Heroic encounter with Anub'arak, where your raid team needs precise execution and strategic thinking. In this phase, the Permafrost resource becomes limited, so you have to manage it carefully.
As the main tank, your role is crucial in luring Anub'arak away from any existing Permafrost about ten seconds before he burrows. This prevents the ice from being destroyed too soon, as you'll need it later to kite the boss.
The main strategy is to place two to three batches of Permafrost strategically at either end of the room. Whether it's north and south or east and west, the goal is to have enough ice available for effective kiting of Anub'arak.
When the boss is about to burrow again, lead him away from the Permafrost to set up the kiting. When Anub'arak goes underground, your whole raid must quickly move to the opposite end of the room. Meanwhile, the targeted player – usually a class with good mobility – should expertly kite around the ice whenever possible.
As the raid positions themselves where the boss was initially tanked, Anub'arak will have to move across the entire room, giving you valuable time to chip away at his health. It's a coordinated dance of movement and positioning to make the most of every second.
During this phase, avoid using abilities like Divine Shield, Ice Block, and Hand of Protection. They make the boss choose a new target without resetting his speed. Instead, focus on consistent kiting and quickly deal with any adds that appear to stay in control.
With strategic Permafrost placement and flawless execution, you can pave the way to victory against the tough Anub'arak. So, rally your team, stay nimble, and face the challenge head-on in this thrilling encounter!
Phase 3 Leeching Swarm
Phase 3, the dreaded Leeching Swarm, is the ultimate test of your raid's skill and coordination. As Anub'arak's health drops to 30%, get ready for a relentless attack.
Leeching Swarm takes 10% of each raid member's current health (30% in heroic) and gives it to Anub'arak as healing at an extremely high rate. Use healing reduction abilities, like Aimed Shot or Mortal Strike, to counter this drain.
While Anub'arak no longer goes underground, he still uses the abilities from earlier phases. In heroic difficulty, Nerubian Burrowers also join the fight every 45 seconds. Save Heroism/Bloodlust and cooldowns for the final part of the phase. Focus solely on the boss, making every second count.
Keep the raid's HP low without causing deaths to reduce healing conversion. Skilled healers can help finish the fight faster. Passive healing abilities are crucial, and Nature Resistance Totem or Aspect of the Wild is vital to handle ticking nature damage.
Coordinate Divine Guardian rotations, but Dampen Magic won't fully reduce Leeching Swarm's damage below 250 HP per tick.
Phase 3 is a true challenge, but with great timing and skilled healing, your raid can achieve victory against this tough foe!
