MMR, also known as Matchmaking Rating in Dota 2, is the primary numerical indicator of your gameplay level. It determines your skill and is used to match you with equally skilled opponents. However, this system doesn't always work perfectly due to its flaws, which we'll discuss in more detail below.
Let's start from the beginning. After you've installed and launched the game for the first time, you should go through the tutorial and then unlock Ranked Matches. To unlock them, you need to spend 100 hours in games. Once MMR is unlocked, you need to link your phone number to your account and calibrate your MMR. Calibration involves playing 10 games, after which you'll find out the numerical value the game has assigned to you. Each MMR range corresponds to its own seasonal medal, which you can see in the image below.
These medals are just a visual representation of your gameplay level. Even if you've just started playing Dota 2, it doesn't mean your rating will be the lowest. Often, beginners immediately achieve Guardian or Crusader rank. Additionally, once a year you can recalibrate your MMR. This can be done in the in-game settings, as shown below.
The in-game system, as seen, is presented in an interesting way, allowing beginners to first play the game, learn the basics, and then proceed to MMR.
There is no exact answer to this question, as there are no official comments from the developers with precise formulas for calculating MMR. However, thanks to players' experience, we can deduce the main points affecting MMR calculation. As for calibration, the first games can be very challenging as lanes play a crucial role in this process.
You will be matched with opponents of vastly different Matchmaking Ratings. If you win, you will be matched with stronger opponents, which will help determine the level of your gameplay and find an appropriate rating. After these processes, you will learn your MMR, which can be viewed in your profile's history. Below is a visual representation:
After calibration, the process of increasing your rating begins, during which you gain MMR for each won game and lose it for each lost game. The amount of MMR you receive depends on how much impact you had on the game and who you fought against. If you defeat a stronger opponent, you will be awarded more MMR, and if you lose to a weaker one, more MMR will be deducted. Additionally, the Rank Confidence indicator plays a significant role.
The higher this indicator, the more stable the changes in your rating. The lower it is, the more rating you can receive. With each game, this indicator will gradually increase, more accurately determining your level of play.
In general, no one knows the exact numbers one game gives. On average, you can receive from 20 to 40 MMR per game. The process of increasing MMR is quite lengthy, and sometimes there are situations where it becomes impossible to raise MMR, not because of bad gameplay, but because of the team. In such periods, you begin to think that it's impossible for many games in a row to have players who play very poorly. But we'll tell you, it's possible. All because Dota operates on an unofficial 50/50 system, where if you win multiple times, the game tries to slow down your rapid rating growth by adding weaker players to your team who have lost many games in a row. And vice versa, if you lose a lot, strong teammates may be thrown at you. In such conditions, it's difficult to increase your MMR, so we offer you a solution - our MMR Boost will help you raise your rating to any height and play at a high level, enjoying the game and your new beautiful medal.
