WoW Classic Era Tank Tier List: Warrior, Druid and Paladin
In this Classic Era tank tier list, Warrior is S tier, Feral Druid is B tier and Protection Paladin is C tier, with A tier left empty on purpose because the gap between the classes is that big. Classic Era has only these three tanks, since the original talents and no runes are in the game. The ranking is our reading of a published Vanilla tank ranking reviewed on , plus a Warrior tank talent guide updated on .
It covers raid tanking at level 60 and is not based on live logs from 2026. A tank damage leaderboard would not tell you much anyway, because it does not measure how well a tank survives.
Raid tank rankings and their limits
| Tier | Tank | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| S | Warrior | Main tank and off-tank in every raid |
| A | none | The gap to Warrior is too big for a tank here |
| B | Feral Druid (Bear) | Off-tank who also does damage |
| C | Protection Paladin | Dungeons with big pulls |
Every raiding guild in Era has several Warrior tanks. A Druid can earn a raid spot as the one off-tank who switches to Cat Form when the fight allows it, and a Paladin is a real option in dungeons and a hard sell in raids.
Warrior: defensive and Fury-Protection builds
Warrior is the best tank in Classic Era because it has the strongest toolkit for both threat and damage taken. Shield Wall and Last Stand are big emergency cooldowns, and Taunt with Mocking Blow lets you grab an enemy back. Warriors also bring raid debuffs such as Sunder Armor, Thunder Clap and Demoralizing Shout.
A current Warrior tank guide splits builds into three styles:
- Defensive: every defensive talent except Anticipation. This is the build for a fresh 60 in weaker gear.
- Balanced: for bosses that cannot be taunted. It drops Improved Taunt, takes Improved Shield Wall for fights like Nefarian and adds a little threat.
- Offensive: a Fury-Protection build that tanks with two weapons and keeps a shield ready to swap in when damage gets scary. It only works with strong gear, many consumables and world buffs, and a raid that goes all out.
The best defensive talent for a single point is Improved Shield Block. With it, Shield Block blocks two attacks, which makes you immune to critical hits from most bosses without great gear. For dungeons, a two-handed weapon with Sweeping Strikes gives far more AoE threat, while full Protection there can leave you short on rage.
Feral Druid: bear tanking and flexible raid roles
A bear has very high single target threat thanks to Maul, so it holds a boss easily. Druids lack the Warrior’s mitigation tools, though, so they take much more damage, and on some fights that damage is simply too high to tank safely.
That is why a Druid fits best as one off-tank who tanks where it works and does damage in Cat Form where it doesn’t. It also brings Leader of the Pack and Faerie Fire (Feral) to the raid either way. If you like this mix, our Classic Era DPS tier list shows where Cat Form ranks.
Protection Paladin: dungeon strengths and raid limits
Protection Paladin has the best AoE threat of the three tanks, so it holds big dungeon pulls well. In raids it runs into two problems. A Paladin has no taunt in Classic Era, and its threat depends a lot on Holy Shield, which only works while the enemy is hitting it. It also runs on mana, and tank gear has little Intellect or mana regeneration.
In a dungeon you drink between pulls, so mana is rarely an issue. In a long raid fight there is no such break, and a Paladin who runs out of mana stops building threat. The Paladin tank from The Burning Crusade is a different class kit, so don’t judge the Era Paladin by it.
Dungeons, main tanking and off-tanking
Tanks do three different jobs, and the ranking changes with the job:
- Five-player dungeons: all three tanks work. Paladins handle AoE pulls very well, and Warriors need a plan for AoE threat.
- Main tank in a raid: Warrior. It survives the biggest hits and has the cooldowns for emergencies.
- Off-tank in a raid: Warrior first, a Druid as the flexible extra. A Paladin without a taunt struggles to pick up adds or take over a boss.
If you want a level 60 tank geared through dungeons first, our Classic Era dungeon service can run them with you, and our Classic Era dungeons and raids guide lists where to go.
Hardcore changes the risk calculation
On a Hardcore realm a death is final, so a wipe in a dungeon costs the tank its character. Take the defensive Warrior build, keep a shield on and save Shield Wall and Last Stand for the moment things go wrong. The offensive Fury-Protection build is made for overgeared groups that go all out, and on Hardcore it is a risk you should take only when you know the group well.
Before 60, Hardcore also limits how often you can run dungeons, so plan your tank practice. Our Classic Hardcore guide has the full rules.
Frequently asked questions
Warrior. It has the strongest cooldowns such as Shield Wall and Last Stand, a taunt, and the best mitigation, which is why every raiding guild has several Warrior tanks.
The ranking we follow leaves it empty on purpose, because the gap between Warrior and the other two tanks is too big for a single step. Druid is B tier and Paladin is C tier.
Yes, in dungeons, where its AoE threat is the best of the three tanks and you can drink between pulls. In raids it has no taunt and runs out of mana in long fights, so it ranks C tier.
Start with the defensive build, which takes every defensive talent except Anticipation. Move to the balanced build for bosses that cannot be taunted, and use the offensive Fury-Protection build only with strong gear, consumables and a raid that goes all out.
As one off-tank, yes. Maul gives a bear very high single target threat, but it takes much more damage than a Warrior, so it fits best as a flexible off-tank who also does damage in Cat Form.
