WoW Classic Era vs Anniversary vs SoD: Which Should You Play?

The difference in Classic Era vs Anniversary is whether you want Vanilla WoW at level 60 for good or a version that keeps moving. Classic Era is the permanent home of the original game, with all seven Vanilla raids open and no phase calendar. The Anniversary realms started as fresh Vanilla in November 2024 and moved on to The Burning Crusade in 2026, while Season of Discovery is Vanilla with runes and new class roles. This guide compares all three as of and helps you pick a realm.

What Classic Era means in November 2026

Classic Era is the original Azeroth that Blizzard kept as its own branch when the first Classic realms moved on to TBC in 2021. The level cap is 60, and Molten Core, Onyxia’s Lair, Blackwing Lair, Zul’Gurub, both Ahn’Qiraj raids and Naxxramas are all in the game at the same time. Nothing unlocks on a schedule, so a new player can see the whole endgame from day one.

The client still gets updates. The last patch we could confirm is 1.15.9 from July 2026, which brought an Edit Mode for the interface, new nameplates and new raid frames. A newer minor patch may exist, and we did not check the live client on the day of writing. These are interface changes, and the game rules and raids stayed Vanilla.

Era, TBC Anniversary and SoD compared

All three versions share the same client family, so they look alike in the launcher. What you can actually play is very different.

VersionLevel capContent nowClasses
Classic Era60All seven Vanilla raids, no phasesOriginal talents, no runes
TBC Anniversary70Phase 4 with Zul’Aman since October 22, 2026TBC talents, Blood Elves and Draenei
Season of Discovery60Phase 8 with Scarlet Enclave, the last big phaseRunes and new roles such as Warlock tanks

The Anniversary realms went to The Burning Crusade with the Dark Portal on . Before that, Blizzard offered a short move from Anniversary to Era, and that window closed on , so it is not an option today. What the current TBC phase contains is in our TBC Anniversary phase overview.

Season of Discovery is still open, but Blizzard slowed work on it in May 2025 and has not announced a Phase 9. If you are thinking about SoD instead, our SoD status and realms guide explains where it stands. Pick Era when you want the original classes and raids to stay as they are, Anniversary when you want new content and Outland, and SoD when the rune classes are what you are after.

Normal Era or Hardcore?

Hardcore realms are part of the Vanilla family as well, with one big rule on top: you have one life. When your character dies, it stays dead on the Hardcore realm. You can move it to a normal Era realm and keep playing there, but it does not get its Hardcore status back. Before 60, Hardcore also limits how often you can run dungeons and has no normal battlegrounds.

Self-Found is an extra option on Hardcore that you choose on a new level 1 character. It blocks trading, the Auction House and most mail, so you gear up only from what you find and make yourself. You can still group with other players. Our Classic Hardcore guide covers the rules and how to survive to 60.

Choosing an EU realm and community

Blizzard does not publish population numbers for Era, so any figure you see on a site or in a thread is an estimate. Many old Era realms are connected into clusters that share one world, and raid log sites show which ones belong together. These are examples of active European communities that we found, and they are not a ranking:

TypeExample cluster
EU PvPFiremaw, connected with Ashbringer, Golemagg, Mograine and others
EU PvEPyrewood Village, connected with Mirage Raceway and Nethergarde Keep
German PvEEverlook, connected with Lakeshire
EU HardcoreStitches and Nek’Rosh

Before you level a main, spend an evening on the realm you like. Read the guild recruitment posts, watch the trade and group channels, and check when raids form, because a guild with raid times that fit your week matters more than any population number. Pick the faction too, since Era keeps the old rule that Paladins are Alliance only and Shamans are Horde only. We could not confirm a working paid character transfer for Era right now, so plan as if your first realm is the one you stay on.

Dual Spec, Group Finder and UI changes

In late 2025 Blizzard added Dual Spec and a Group Finder to Era, and original Hardcore realms got Dual Spec, Instant Mail and the same group tool. The original announcement post is no longer online, so we rely on a reprint of it and on players who use both features. The Group Finder lists groups, and it does not build a group for you or teleport you into a dungeon. We could not confirm the cost of Dual Spec or the level you need for it.

Is new Era content planned?

On the day of writing we found no official announcement of a new raid or phase for permanent Classic Era. Blizzard could still change that later, but it has not said so in public. World of Warcraft: Forever goes live on with a reimagined Azeroth up to level 60, but it is a separate version, so its new zones and stories are not coming to Era.

If Era sounds right, our Classic Era leveling guide takes you to 60, and the Classic Era DPS tier list helps you pick a class. Everything we offer for this version is on our Classic Era page.

Frequently asked questions

Classic Era stays at level 60 with all seven Vanilla raids open and no phases. The Anniversary realms started as fresh Vanilla in November 2024, moved to The Burning Crusade on February 5, 2026 and are now in the Zul’Aman phase with a level cap of 70.

Play Era if you want the original classes, talents and raids. Play Season of Discovery if you want runes and new roles such as Warlock tanks or Mage healers. Both are level 60, and neither has a new phase announced.

Blizzard does not publish player numbers for Era, so every population figure online is an estimate. Many realms are connected into clusters such as Firemaw in EU PvP or Everlook with Lakeshire for German players, and the best test is an evening of reading guild and group chat on the realm you like.

The free move from Anniversary to Era closed on January 12, 2026. We could not confirm a working paid transfer for Era in November 2026, so plan as if you stay on the realm you start on. A dead Hardcore character can still continue on a normal Era realm.

Yes. Blizzard added both to Era in late 2025, and players use them today. The Group Finder lists groups but does not build them or teleport you. We could not confirm what Dual Spec costs or from which level it is available.

We found no official announcement of a new raid or phase for Era as of November 2, 2026. World of Warcraft: Forever launches on November 4, 2026, but it is a separate version and its content does not come to Era.
