WoW Classic Era Gold Farming: Methods for a Mature Economy
Gold farming in Classic Era works best when you sell what raiders use every week: high-level herbs and ore, flasks and potions, cloth and the materials from crafting cooldowns. All seven raids have been open on Era for years, so the economy is mature, and a farm that pays well on one realm can be crowded on another. A fixed gold-per-hour number would not hold across realms, so this guide explains the methods and why they work, and your own auction house shows which one pays right now.
How to compare farms on your realm
Before you spend an evening on one farm, look up what its items actually sell for on your auction house, and not only what they are listed at. Items that sit for days without selling are worth less than their price tag. Then count what the farm costs you: travel to the spot, repairs, consumables, the auction house deposit and cut, and whatever stays unsold.
The easiest test is to farm for one hour with empty bags, write down what you collected and check the sold price a day later. Do this for two or three methods and you have real numbers for your realm. Watch the competition as well. When five other players circle the same herb route, your share drops even if the price stays the same.
Gathering at level 60
Gathering needs no recipes and no starting gold, so it is the natural first step. At 300 Herbalism the herbs that go into flasks find buyers every raid week, such as Dreamfoil, Mountain Silversage and Icecap. Plaguebloom and Golden Sansam sell too, though how well depends on your realm.
Miners at the top end go for Thorium Ore, and the veins sometimes give gems as well. Elementals drop essences such as Essence of Fire and Essence of Water, and humanoids around level 50 and up drop Runecloth, which tailors need in large amounts. A good route combines two of these, for example herbs and ore in the same zone, so the trip pays twice.
Crafting for raid demand
Crafting turns your materials into the things raids burn through. Alchemists make flasks, and every Classic flask needs a Black Lotus plus herbs. Flask of the Titans, for example, takes Gromsblood, Stonescale Oil, one Black Lotus and a Crystal Vial. Raid potions such as the Major Healing Potion and the Major Mana Potion are the everyday side of Alchemy.
Some crafts are limited by a cooldown, which keeps their supply low. Transmute: Arcanite has a two-day cooldown and turns a Thorium Bar and an Arcane Crystal into an Arcanite Bar, and tailors can make Mooncloth from Felcloth once every four days. Use every cooldown as soon as it is ready, since a missed day can’t be caught up. Enchanters earn from enchanting gear for raiders and from selling shards. Which professions suit which class is in our Classic Era professions guide.
Black Lotus: why old routes need checking
Every flask needs a Black Lotus, and two hotfixes changed how you farm it. In February 2025 Blizzard raised the spawn rate of Black Lotus in all areas on Era, Anniversary and Hardcore realms. In October 2025 Eagle Eye and Far Sight stopped showing high-level herbs and ore to players without enough skill to gather them, so an alt can no longer scout for Lotus unless it has the Herbalism to pick it.
Spawn timers and routes from older guides were written before these changes, so treat them as a starting point and test them yourself.
Class tools and dungeon farming
Some classes farm more easily than others. Mages can pull a large group of enemies and kill them with area damage, and Hunters and Warlocks kill quickly on their own thanks to their pets. Any class can gather, though, and a class that is slow at killing can still be fast at picking herbs.
At 60 the five-player dungeons such as Stratholme, Scholomance and Dire Maul give you Bind on Equip drops, Runecloth and materials in one run. In a group the loot is split, so these runs pay best when you need the gear or reputation anyway. Routes and gold-per-hour claims from past years may no longer hold, so test a route on your own realm before you count on it.
Auction house, Self-Found and GDKP
The auction house is where most of this gold is made, so a little patience there pays. Post at a fair price, don’t undercut by large amounts, and keep what does not sell for a better day instead of selling it to a vendor.
On Hardcore, Self-Found characters can’t use the auction house, trade or most of the mail, so for them gold comes from quests, vendors and their own crafting. Gathering is still worth it, but for your own consumables rather than for sale.
In GDKP raids players pay gold for loot, and the pot is split among the raid at the end. When Blizzard banned GDKP on Season of Discovery in 2024, it said Classic Era was not affected, so check the current rules before you join one. How the system works is explained in our guide to GDKP in WoW.

Frequently asked questions
It depends on your realm, because prices and competition differ. Herbs that go into flasks, Thorium Ore, Runecloth and crafting cooldowns such as Transmute: Arcanite are the usual candidates. Test two or three of them for an hour each and compare what actually sells.
There is no reliable figure, because it changes with your realm, your class and how many players farm the same spot. Older numbers come from earlier years of Classic. Farm for one hour, note what you collected and check what it sold for.
Mages are strong at killing large groups with area damage, and Hunters and Warlocks kill quickly alone with their pets. For gathering herbs and ore any class works, so pick the farm that suits your character.
Yes. In February 2025 Blizzard raised its spawn rate in all areas on Era, Anniversary and Hardcore realms. In October 2025 Eagle Eye and Far Sight stopped showing high-level herbs and ore to players without enough skill, so alts can no longer scout for Lotus.
No. Self-Found characters on Hardcore realms can’t use the auction house, trade or most of the mail. Their gold comes from quests, vendors and their own crafting.
When Blizzard banned GDKP on Season of Discovery in 2024, it said Classic Era was not affected. Rules can change, so check the current policy before you join a GDKP raid.
