WoW Classic Era Professions: Best Choices and 1–300 Basics
Classic Era professions work the way they did in Vanilla: you can learn two primary professions plus all three secondary ones, and every profession caps at skill 300. The best pair depends on your goal, because raiders want their own consumables, PvP players want Engineering gadgets and players saving gold often take two gathering professions. This guide explains the choices for Era, including Hardcore and Self-Found, as of .
Era has the original Vanilla recipes only. Jewelcrafting and Inscription came later in other versions, and the new crafts from Season of Discovery do not exist here.
Primary and secondary professions
There are nine primary professions, and you can hold two of them at a time. To pick up a third, you have to unlearn one of the two, and you lose its skill. The secondary professions have their own slots, so every character can learn all of them.
| Type | Professions |
|---|---|
| Gathering | Herbalism, Mining, Skinning |
| Crafting | Alchemy, Blacksmithing, Engineering, Leatherworking, Tailoring |
| Service | Enchanting |
| Secondary | Cooking, First Aid, Fishing |
First Aid is worth learning on every character, since bandages heal you without mana. Cooking and Fishing go well together, because many recipes use the fish you catch.
Best professions for your goal
The best professions in Classic Era depend on what you plan to do at 60:
- Raiding: Herbalism and Alchemy let you make your own potions and elixirs, which raids use every week. A Flask of the Titans needs a Black Lotus, so flasks stay expensive however you make them.
- PvP and raid utility: Engineering gives you bombs, grenades and gadgets that other players cannot use. It pairs with Mining and costs a lot to level, and it rarely pays that back in gold.
- Gold: two gathering professions, for example Herbalism and Mining, cost almost nothing to level and you sell what you collect. Our Classic Era gold farming guide shows how to compare farms on your realm.
- Gear for your class: Blacksmithing makes plate and mail, Leatherworking leather and mail, and Tailoring cloth and bags.
For Warrior professions, Mining with Engineering or Blacksmithing is the usual pick, since both use the ore you mine. Hunters often take Skinning with Leatherworking for their armor, or Engineering for scopes and gadgets. Priests, Mages and Warlocks usually go Tailoring with Enchanting, because you can disenchant the cloth items you make.
Gathering and crafting pairs
A crafting profession gets much cheaper when a gathering profession feeds it, so most players pick these pairs:
| Gathering | Crafting partner | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Mining | Engineering or Blacksmithing | Both use a lot of ore and bars |
| Herbalism | Alchemy | Potions and elixirs from your own herbs |
| Skinning | Leatherworking | Leather and scales for your own armor |
| None needed | Tailoring with Enchanting | Cloth drops from enemies, and you disenchant what you sew |
Some professions split later on. Engineering offers Gnomish or Goblin Engineering, where Gnomish is about utility and Goblin mostly about explosives such as the Goblin Sapper Charge. Leatherworking has Dragonscale, Elemental and Tribal, and Blacksmithing has armor and weapon paths.
How the 1–300 skill ranks work
You start as an Apprentice and learn each next rank from a trainer once your skill and your character level are high enough.
| Rank | Skill needed | Skill cap | Character level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apprentice | none | 75 | 5 |
| Journeyman | 50 | 150 | 10 |
| Expert | 125 | 225 | 20 |
| Artisan | 200 | 300 | 35 |
Recipe colors tell you what still gives skill. Orange always gives a point, yellow usually does, green rarely does and grey never does. Gathering nodes show the same colors, and a red node means your skill is too low. The cheapest recipes for 1 to 300 depend on what your Auction House has, so craft the cheapest orange or yellow recipe, and switch when it turns green.
If you would rather skip the grind, our Classic Era profession leveling service can take a profession up for you.
Hardcore and Self-Found choices
On normal Hardcore you can still trade and use the Auction House, so the advice above applies. Self-Found blocks trading, the Auction House and most mail, which means you can only use what you gather and craft yourself. A gathering and crafting pair from the same chain, such as Herbalism with Alchemy or Mining with Blacksmithing, keeps you supplied without help. First Aid is even more important here, because bandages are your cheapest healing when things go wrong.
Engineering gadgets can help in a bad pull, but they can fail or leave you in a worse spot, so don’t plan your survival around them. Our Classic Hardcore guide covers safe leveling in detail.
Choosing for a mature Era economy
Era realms have been running for years, so many crafted items are cheap and the Auction House is full of materials. Before you level a profession to make money, check what its best items actually sell for on your realm and what the materials cost.
Two Blizzard changes matter for herb pickers. In February 2025 Blizzard raised the spawn rate of Black Lotus on Era, Anniversary and Hardcore realms, so old notes about how rare it is may be out of date. Since an October 2025 hotfix, Eagle Eye and Far Sight no longer show high level gathering nodes when your skill is too low for them.
Frequently asked questions
It depends on your goal. Herbalism with Alchemy suits raiders who want their own potions, Mining with Engineering suits PvP and raid utility, and two gathering professions such as Herbalism and Mining are the cheapest way to earn gold.
Two primary professions at a time, plus all three secondary professions: Cooking, First Aid and Fishing. To change a primary profession, you have to unlearn one and lose its skill.
300. You learn Apprentice, Journeyman, Expert and Artisan from trainers, with caps of 75, 150, 225 and 300. Artisan needs skill 200 and character level 35.
Mining with Engineering or Blacksmithing is the usual pick. Engineering adds grenades and gadgets for raids and PvP, while Blacksmithing makes plate gear and weapons.
For PvP and raid utility, yes, because its bombs and gadgets are only usable by Engineers. It is expensive to level and rarely a good way to make gold, so pair it with Mining to cover the ore.
Self-Found blocks trading and the Auction House, so pick a gathering and crafting pair from the same chain, such as Herbalism with Alchemy or Mining with Blacksmithing. Learn First Aid too, because bandages are your cheapest healing.
