WoW Classic Era Leveling Guide: A Practical Route from 1 to 60
Classic Era keeps the original Azeroth with a level cap of 60, and leveling there still takes a long time through quests and dungeons. Most players quest in their faction’s zones, join a dungeon group when one forms for your level, save up for the mount at 40 and do the last levels in the Plaguelands, Winterspring or Silithus. Patch 1.15.9 from is the latest Era patch we could confirm, and its changes are to the interface.
Before you start: realm, faction and class
Pick your realm before you pick your class, because the realm decides who you level and raid with. Region, language, PvE or PvP rules and the times your future guild plays all matter more than a few percent of leveling speed. If you are still choosing between Era, Anniversary and Season of Discovery, our Classic Era vs Anniversary vs SoD comparison explains the differences.
Blizzard publishes no leveling tier list, but the class guides agree on the solo picture. Hunters and Warlocks level very comfortably alone because their pets take the hits while they deal damage. Warriors are slower solo and much better with a healer, while Warlocks are among the best partners in a duo. Paladins and Warlocks also get their own class mount at 40, so they spend less gold on their first one.
Questing, dungeons and group leveling
Questing is the default because it runs on your own schedule. You only need yourself, and you can level a gathering profession on the way. Your time goes into fighting, resting between fights and travel, and players who level fast save most of their time on resting and travel.
Dungeons are faster when you have a steady group of five, because a good group kills quickly and the loot is usually better than quest rewards. They get slow when you have to find new players after every run. Since late 2025 Era also has a group finder tool, which helps you list yourself or find a group. Plan to walk to the entrance anyway, as we could not confirm that it moves you there.
Grouping for quests is underrated. Two players who kill fast together often level faster than each of them alone, and it is more fun.
Planning your route from 1 to 60
Each race starts in its own zone, and the paths meet in shared zones from the 20s on. A good rule is to enter a new zone one or two levels above its lowest quests, since easy content done quickly gives more XP than hard content done slowly. Treat the bands below as a rough map.
| Levels | Where you usually quest |
|---|---|
| 1–10 | Your race’s starting zone, such as Elwynn Forest, Dun Morogh, Durotar or Tirisfal Glades |
| 10–20 | Westfall, Loch Modan or Darkshore for the Alliance, The Barrens or Silverpine Forest for the Horde |
| 20–30 | Shared zones such as Ashenvale, Hillsbrad Foothills, Wetlands or Stonetalon Mountains |
| 30–40 | Stranglethorn Vale from about 32, Arathi Highlands, Desolace and Thousand Needles |
| 40–50 | Tanaris, Feralas, The Hinterlands and Badlands |
| 50–60 | Un’Goro Crater, Felwood, Burning Steppes, then Western and Eastern Plaguelands, Winterspring and Silithus |
When the quests left in a zone are red or give little XP, move on. A quest addon or a written route helps here, because it tells you which quests to pick up before you leave a town.
Dungeon stops by recommended level
These are the dungeons that fit a leveling route best, with the level range where the fights and the loot suit you. Horde players have a gap in the late 20s, so questing for those levels is fine too. The range is a recommendation. You can enter Ragefire Chasm from level 8 and The Deadmines from 10, but a group at those levels will struggle.
| Dungeon | Recommended level | Faction |
|---|---|---|
| Ragefire Chasm | 11–18 | Horde |
| The Deadmines | 16–23 | Alliance |
| Wailing Caverns | 18–25 | Horde |
| The Stockade | 23–30 | Alliance |
| Shadowfang Keep or Blackfathom Deeps | 25–30 | Horde |
| Scarlet Monastery | 30–44 | Both |
| Zul’Farrak | 44–49 | Both |
| Blackrock Depths | 49–56 | Both |
| Lower Blackrock Spire | 56–60 | Both |
Uldaman and Maraudon are worth one run each with their quests in your log, even if you don’t farm them. From about 58 you can start on Stratholme and Scholomance, since much of the pre-raid gear there can be worn before 60. Every dungeon with its level range is in our Classic Era dungeons and raids guide.
Bags, training and money for your mount
Your first mount at level 40 is the biggest purchase while leveling, because riding is 60 percent faster than running. Start saving early. Sell grey items to vendors, put cloth, ore and herbs on the auction house and train only the spell ranks you actually use.
Bags are worth buying early too, since full bags mean more trips to a vendor. A gathering profession such as Herbalism, Mining or Skinning brings in money for the mount while you level, and you can still switch to a crafting profession at 60. Which pair fits your class is in our Classic Era professions guide.
Leveling addons after patch 1.15.9
Patch 1.15.9 brought Edit Mode, new nameplates and new raid frames to Era. That is good news for the default interface, but addons made before the patch may break or need an update, so check that a quest helper or route addon lists 1.15.9 support before you rely on it. Era also has Dual Spec now, which lets you keep a leveling build and a dungeon build and switch between them.
If you want to play Hardcore
Hardcore realms use the same zones, but one death ends the character on that realm. There are no battlegrounds, and below 60 almost every dungeon has a lockout of at least 24 hours, so the dungeon stops above work differently there. Our Classic Hardcore guide with rules and tips to 60 covers safe leveling on those realms.
If you would rather skip the grind on a normal Era realm, our Classic Era power leveling service takes your character to the level you need.
Frequently asked questions
Dungeons are faster with a steady group of five, because a good group kills quickly and the loot beats most quest rewards. Without a fixed group, questing is usually the better choice, since finding new players for every run costs a lot of time. A mix of both works for most characters.
Blizzard publishes no leveling tier list. Class guides rate Hunters and Warlocks as very strong solo levelers because their pets take the hits. Warriors are slower alone but very strong with a healer, so they do well in duos and dungeon groups.
At level 40. Riding is 60 percent faster than running, so it is the biggest time saver while leveling. Paladins and Warlocks get their own class mount at 40, and everyone else should start saving gold well before that.
Since late 2025 Era has a group finder tool where you can list yourself or find a group. We could not confirm that it moves you to the dungeon, so plan to travel to the entrance with your group.
Patch 1.15.9 changed the interface with Edit Mode, new nameplates and new raid frames, so older addons may need an update. Check that your quest or route addon lists 1.15.9 support before you rely on it.
The zones are the same, but Hardcore has its own rules. Death is permanent, there are no battlegrounds and below 60 almost every dungeon has a lockout of at least 24 hours. Our Classic Hardcore guide covers safe leveling there.
