Is WoW SoD Still Active? Realms and Returning Guide 2026
Yes, Season of Discovery is still active in 2026. The realms are open, Phase 8 is the last big phase so far, and in May 2025 Blizzard said it had no plans to shut the SoD realms down. Big updates have stopped, though, so whether SoD is worth playing for you comes down to the right realm and a guild that still raids. This guide covers what is known on , and what nobody knows yet.
If you want the content side first, with every raid and the level cap, our SoD Phase 8 overview has it on one page.
Is Season of Discovery over or still playable?
The Scarlet Enclave raid in April 2025 was the last major content release, and in May 2025 the Classic team said it would slow down work on SoD to start its next project. In the same message it said it hoped SoD would keep running much like Classic Era for many months, maybe years.
Blizzard still ships the odd fix, for example a hotfix in June 2026 that added an NPC for turning experience off in Thunder Bluff and near the Undercity entrance. Players also still organise events on the realms in 2026. So SoD is over in the sense that no new phases are coming for now, and it is playable in every other sense. Blizzard has promised no fixed end date in either direction.
SoD realms in EU and NA: which one to pick
In September 2024 Blizzard merged the many launch realms into a few target realms per region. These are the names from that plan:
| Region | PvE realm | PvP realm |
|---|---|---|
| Europe | Wild Growth | Living Flame |
| North America | Wild Growth | Crusader Strike |
EU and NA each have their own Wild Growth, so make sure you pick the right region. If you live in Europe, play on the EU realms, because your ping and your raid times will fit. Wild Growth EU is confirmed active in 2026 because a big community event runs there. For Living Flame we have no recent numbers, so look at it yourself before you commit. The Oceanic realms Penance and Shadowstrike once had a migration route to Wild Growth and Crusader Strike, and we cannot say whether that route is still open today.
SoD server population, faction and guild activity
Blizzard does not publish player numbers, and the population sites and forum threads you will find disagree with each other. Players who came back in 2026 report very different experiences depending on realm and faction, so treat any single number with care.
A better test takes one evening. Make a character on the realm you like, read the guild recruitment posts and the trade and looking for group channels, and note when raids form. The faction matters more than in most versions, because SoD keeps the old Classic rules: Paladins are Alliance only and Shamans are Horde only. Pick the faction where your class and your preferred raid times both fit.
SoD fresh servers and phase-locked communities
There are no official fresh SoD servers. What exists instead are player-run restarts on the current Phase 8 realms. The best known is a community Fake Fresh event on Wild Growth EU for the Horde, which started on . Several guilds took new characters through the old phases on a shared schedule, and by mid August 2026 everything up to Scarlet Enclave was open to them. The event was planned to keep going, so ask about it on the realm if a restart sounds good to you.
Those phase caps were a rule inside the guilds and never a server limit. The game always lets you level to 60, and players who want to stay at a lower level turn experience off at the NPC for that.
What happens to your existing characters?
They stay where they are. Your SoD characters live on the SoD realms, and Blizzard has not announced any move of SoD characters to Classic Era, the Anniversary realms or another version. The 2024 realm merge happened inside SoD and did not move anyone out of it.
In 2025 Blizzard gave players who defeated Balnazzar in Scarlet Enclave a free boost for Mists of Pandaria Classic. That boost is for the other version, and your SoD character and its gear stay on SoD.
Phase 9, fresh servers and a shutdown date
Phase 9 has not been announced. An official fresh SoD realm has not been announced. A shutdown date has not been announced either, and Blizzard said the opposite in May 2025. Anything you read with a date for one of these is a guess. New SoD content is still possible, but nothing is planned in public.
Is Season of Discovery worth playing in 2026? A checklist
SoD is worth it if you like the rune classes and you find a guild with raid times that suit you. Work through these steps in order:
- Pick your region and realm, then check guild activity on that faction.
- Buy your runes from the Rune Broker in your starting zone for 1 copper each.
- Level to 60 with the help of our SoD leveling guide.
- Choose your role with the SoD DPS tier list or the SoD tank tier list.
- Gear up with our SoD dungeons and raids guide, and fund it with the SoD gold farming guide.
If you want to skip a part of that, our Season of Discovery services cover leveling, raids and gold.
Frequently asked questions
Yes. The SoD realms are open, Blizzard said in May 2025 that it had no plans to shut them down, and it still released a hotfix in June 2026. New content phases have stopped for now.
No, but it is quieter than during its big phases. How active it feels depends on your realm, faction and guild, so check recruitment posts and raid times on the realm before you commit.
The EU target realms from the 2024 merge are Wild Growth for PvE and Living Flame for PvP. Wild Growth EU is confirmed active in 2026 because a large community event runs there.
No official ones. Players run their own restarts instead, such as the Fake Fresh event on Wild Growth EU for the Horde that started on June 19, 2026.
Blizzard has not announced any move of SoD characters to Classic Era or another version. Your characters stay on the SoD realms.
There is no shutdown date. In May 2025 Blizzard said it hoped SoD would keep running much like Classic Era for many months or even years.
