WoW SoD Gold Farming Guide: Phase 8 Farms and Professions

Gold farming in SoD on Phase 8 works best when you sell what raiders and catch-up players need right now: raid materials such as Arcane Crystals, consumables, and the crafted gear from New Avalon. No one has measured gold per hour for these farms on today’s realms, and prices differ from realm to realm. This guide explains why each method makes money, and your own auction house shows which one pays best on your realm. Checked on .

Start with your realm’s auction house

Phase 8 is the last released phase, and every raid from Molten Core to the Scarlet Enclave is open. Demand comes from players gearing for those raids and from new characters catching up, so it shifts with each realm’s population and raid schedule. A price you read for another realm tells you very little about yours.

Before you farm anything, look up the item on your auction house over a few days. Note the lowest price, how many are listed and whether they actually sell or just sit there. An item with a high price and a long list of unsold copies is a weaker farm than a cheaper one that sells out every evening. New Avalon also has a neutral auction house, so compare it with your faction’s one when you are there.

Gathering and raid materials

Mining and herbalism are the easiest start, because you can gather while you level or travel and sell the materials without crafting anything. Enchanting fits next to them, since you can disenchant the greens and blues you find instead of selling them to a vendor.

The Arcane Crystal is a good example of a material with steady demand. Miners find it as a rare extra from Thorium veins. Players need it for the Naxxramas attunement: at Honored with the Argent Dawn the hand-in asks for five, at Revered for two. Since Phase 8 the Naxxramas tier rings cost three Arcane Crystals each, down from ten. Fewer crystals per ring means less demand than before, so check the price first.

While leveling, the mobs in Nightmare Incursions are worth a look. They spawn often, few players fight them, and Nightterror Whelps can drop Small Flame Sacs, which cooks use for Dragonbreath Chili.

Crafting and New Avalon

Phase 8 gave every armor crafting profession eight new recipes. Most drop from the Scarlet crusaders around New Avalon, and a few only from the Scarlet Enclave raid. The recipes and the items they make can be bought, sold and traded. To walk around New Avalon in disguise, a player needs a Scarlet Insignia and four of these crafted pieces, so every new character who wants to go there is a possible buyer.

Inside the town some residents offer quests for more recipes, such as bigger bags and cooking feasts. Bryon Steelblade, the Scarlet Quartermaster, has a weekly quest to craft or donate equipment for a Scarlet Junkbox. It holds Tarnished Undermine Reals, crafting materials and Jostled Chalice Fragments, and with enough fragments you can make a Crusader’s Chalice and trade it with disguise pieces for class tier set pieces. That gives crafted pieces a use every week. How much a craft earns still depends on what the materials cost on your realm.

Dungeon loot and Tarnished Undermine Reals

A dungeon run pays in three different ways. You get vendor gold from coins and junk, and tradeable drops such as recipes, materials and items that bind on equip, which you can sell on the auction house. You also get Tarnished Undermine Reals, a currency you spend at Pix Xizzix in Booty Bay. You can’t sell them on the auction house, so they never turn into gold directly.

From level 55 most non-rare dungeon bosses drop Reals once per day, and raid bosses drop them too. Since Phase 8 Karazhan Crypts and Demon Fall Canyon drop more of them. You can hold up to 250, so anything above that is lost. Reals still save you gold, because Pix sells flask recipes, Core Leather, Lava Cores and Fiery Cores, and tier tokens. When you buy those with Reals, the gold you would have spent stays in your bags. Because anyone with Reals can buy these items, their auction house price can stay low.

If you need Reals and have no time for daily runs, we also offer Tarnished Undermine Reals as a separate service.

Test a farm before you commit

A short test tells you more than any list, because it uses your realm, your class and your play time. Pick one farm, play it for 30 to 60 minutes and write down the realm, the date and what you collected. Then list it, count only what actually sold, and subtract repairs, consumables and the auction house fees. Do this on two different days before you put whole evenings into it, because a single good night can come from an empty market that fills up the next day.

What old phase guides get wrong

Many SoD gold guides were written for Phase 7 or earlier, so check the details before you follow them. Farms built around the old level caps of 25, 40 and 50 matter much less now that every character levels straight to 60. The Reals cap went up from 150 to 250. Phase 8 also made the tier items from Ahn’Qiraj and Naxxramas about half as expensive and dropped the Arcane Crystals for the Naxxramas rings from ten to three. Any gold figure from an older guide also comes from a realm and a time that are not yours.

For more on catching up, see our SoD dungeons and raids guide. If you need gold for consumables or crafted gear and don’t have the time to farm it, you can also buy SoD gold from us.

Frequently asked questions

There is no single best farm, because prices and demand differ from realm to realm. Raid materials such as Arcane Crystals, consumables and New Avalon crafted gear all have steady buyers, so check your own auction house to see which pays best.

No reliable gold-per-hour figures exist for today’s realms. Test a farm for 30 to 60 minutes, count only what actually sold and subtract your costs to get your own number.

Mining and herbalism are the easiest start, and enchanting fits next to them. The armor crafting professions got eight tradeable recipes each in Phase 8, and the New Avalon disguise needs four crafted pieces.

No. Reals are a currency you spend at Pix Xizzix in Booty Bay. They save you gold, because you can buy flask recipes, crafting materials and tier tokens with them instead.

They are part of the Naxxramas attunement hand-in at Honored and Revered with the Argent Dawn, and each Naxxramas tier ring costs three of them since Phase 8.

Only in parts. Level caps, the Reals cap and many raid costs have changed since Phase 7, and their gold figures came from other realms and other times.
