WoW SoD Tank Tier List: Phase 8 Roles, Builds and Runes
In the last published SoD tank tier list for Phase 8, Protection Paladin and Rogue tank sit in S tier, Protection Warrior is in A, and Warlock, Shaman and Bear Druid are in B. The ranking dates from , and we found no newer one, so read it as our view of guide data and not as live logs from November 2026.
Season of Discovery has six tank options instead of the usual three, because runes let Rogues, Warlocks and Shamans tank as well. This page explains what each one does well, which runes make it work and where it fits in a raid. For the damage side, see our SoD DPS tier list.
What the SoD tank list measures
A good tank survives big hits, holds threat on one boss and on many adds, and has cooldowns for the dangerous moments. Utility counts too, such as taunts, buffs for the raid and debuffs on the boss. Tank damage shows up in logs, but it says little about how safe a tank is or how easy it is to heal, so this ranking rests on guide judgment far more than on numbers. Two of the six tanks are also tied to a faction: Paladins are Alliance only and Shamans are Horde only.

The ranking used only S, A and B, so no tank landed in C. One rank is less certain than the rest: the source puts Rogue in S, while its own text calls Rogue the weakest tank for AoE threat. Keep that in mind before you level a Rogue just to tank.
All six SoD tank options
Protection Paladin
The Paladin holds threat on large pulls, has strong cooldowns and keeps itself alive well, and it brings Blessings for the raid on top. That is why Paladins tank so much content on their own. In Phase 8 Blizzard pushed tank Paladins away from damage runes like Sheath of Light, so builds now centre on Malleable Protection, Aegis and Hand of Reckoning, the taunt that fixed the old Paladin problem of having none.
Rogue tank
Just a Flesh Wound is the rune that makes a Rogue a tank, and it turns Feint into Tease, a taunt. Blade Dance adds parry, and Main Gauche ties the rotation together. The Rogue is very strong in short, heavy bursts of damage. The weak spots are snap threat on many enemies and long defensive cooldowns, which make long fights harder.
Protection Warrior
The Warrior does more damage than any other tank, on one target and in cleave, and it brings Sunder Armor, Thunder Clap and Demoralizing Shout. Furious Thunder lets it use Thunder Clap in Defensive Stance, and a Blizzard hotfix in April 2025 set its threat bonus to 75%. What the Warrior lacks is instant AoE threat on a big pull.
Warlock tank
With Metamorphosis the Warlock tanks in demon form. Searing Pain becomes instant and builds threat from 30 yards, and Menace gives it a short taunt. It gathers packs very well and makes a good off tank, but it is less durable in raids and behind on single-target threat. For the Horde it is the go-to AoE tank, since the Horde has no Paladins.
Shaman tank
Way of Earth works as a tank stance while you have Rockbiter Weapon on and a shield equipped. Phase 8 tanks play one of two styles: Ele Warden for spells and AoE, or Enhance Warden with Stormstrike for single-target threat. The Shaman has some of the best AoE burst of any tank, and blocks keep its mana up, but its damage on long boss fights is low.
Bear Druid
Survival of the Fittest is the rune that makes the bear sturdy, and Mangle with Berserk carries its threat. The Druid can switch to Cat Form when a fight needs one tank less. It does the least damage of the six tanks and struggles to hold threat against SoD’s very strong melee. The Druid tank section of the rune reference we used still dates from Phase 7.
Main tank, off tank and dungeon pulls
For an Alliance main tank, the Paladin is the safe choice and the Warrior is the one with the most damage. The Horde has no Paladin, so its highest ranked tanks are the Rogue and the Warrior, while the Warlock and the Shaman take big trash pulls and off tanking. In 5-player dungeons like Karazhan Crypts or Demon Fall Canyon, AoE threat decides more than single-target damage, so Paladin, Warlock and Shaman tend to feel strongest there. Bear and Rogue do best on fights with one big target.

Buy the tank runes from the Rune Broker in your starting zone for 1 copper each, then level with the catch-up experience bonus. Our SoD leveling guide has the route.
