The Unbinding of Kith’ix Raid Guide: Boss Fight, Loot & Rewards
The Unbinding of Kith’ix is a one-boss raid that arrives with patch 12.1.5 on October 13 in the US and October 14 in Europe. You fight Kith’ix, an ancient aqir general, with Lady Liadrin at your side, and the raid sits next to the other WoW Midnight raids of the season. The kill drops some of the most unusual gear of Midnight Season 2, plus a toy that gives paladins Liadrin’s wings. This guide covers how to get in, what drops on each difficulty, how the fight works and how to farm it without wasting your week.

How to unlock The Unbinding of Kith’ix
Blizzard lists the raid as part of the 12.1.5 content update, which goes live on October 13 in the Americas and October 14 in Europe, during Midnight Season 2. On the test server every difficulty was there from the start, but Blizzard has not published a separate unlock schedule for each mode, so check the Group Finder on launch day before you plan a Mythic night.
You need a level 90 character. On the Coiled Isle, go into the Vaults of Atal’Utek through any of its three entrances, then head to the back of the complex into the Underbelly. In its north-east part a staircase that used to be sealed under a pool of venom leads further down, and the raid portal waits at the far end of the room below. Expect hostile creatures on the way. Preview guides use this waypoint, which we will confirm on the live servers:
/way #2613 74.0 7.4 The Unbinding of Kith’ix
For the story, Liadrin offers the quest The Unbinding of Kith’ix, which follows In the Belly of the Beast in the Sins of the Past chapter. She sends you into Story Mode, but the quest also counts a Kith’ix kill on any difficulty. Finish it and you get the Hiveborne Hearthstone. The item level needed for Raid Finder and the exact campaign steps an alt must repeat are not published yet.
Kith’ix boss fight, phase by phase
The fight has two parts. In Stage One, Darkness’ Domain, you kill waves of aqir while the boss builds energy and darkness takes the room again and again. At 25% health Stage Two, Last Light, begins: Liadrin heals the raid and you race to kill Kith’ix before his last ritual ends. Exact numbers differed between test builds, so we describe what to do rather than precise percentages.
Pull the adds away from the boss
Commanding Presence makes aqir near Kith’ix take much less damage. Stacking everything on the boss and cleaving is therefore a bad plan: one tank holds Kith’ix on his own, and the other drags the adds away so the raid can kill them together. Watch the add types, because the Venomous Hulk hits in a cone with knockback, the Voidweaver keeps pressure on the raid and the Bomber Beetles chase players. On Heroic and Mythic you also deal with Mindstinger Eggs and stunning Mindstingers.
Kill the adds before the boss hits 100 energy
At 100 energy Kith’ix casts Suffocating Darkness, and every aqir still alive gets Dark Frenzy: it moves faster, ignores crowd control and damages the whole raid. Watch the boss’s energy bar as closely as his health, because one forgotten add can turn a clean transition into a wipe.
Spread out the beetle explosions
A Bomber Beetle explodes after 30 seconds or as soon as it touches a player, and every explosion puts a stacking damage-over-time effect, Digestive Juices, on the whole raid. Running away from a beetle doesn’t help much, because the effect hits everyone; what matters is that beetles never explode at the same time, so pop them one by one.
Pick up Liadrin’s light before Extinguish
Liadrin scatters motes of Light’s Embrace. Touching one gives you a big Shadow damage reduction, and you need it before Kith’ix hits the raid with Extinguish. Every player has to grab their own mote, and a healer can’t make up for one you missed.
Move out first, then dispel the fear
Unspeakable Horrors leaves players with Overwhelming Fear, which explodes when it is dispelled or runs out, and the damage drops with distance. So the feared player moves away from the group first and the healer dispels after that, because a quick dispel in the middle of the raid hurts everyone around.
Stay in Liadrin’s light during the darkness
When darkness fills the room, stay inside the area Liadrin protects. Abyssal Grasp absorbs healing and drags its targets into the dark unless they are healed through it in time. When Liadrin reaches 100 energy, Divine Radiance clears the darkness and stuns the boss for 8 seconds, but each cast leaves her Exhausted: her protection gets weaker while the darkness hits harder. That is the fight’s soft enrage, so even a raid that does every mechanic right can’t drag the fight out forever.
Heroic and Mythic: catch the fragments
The tank hit Dark Devastation leaves a Voidscar on the floor. During the darkness, Eclipse Fragments come out of these scars and move toward Liadrin. If one reaches her, the raid takes damage and her safe area shrinks, so players have to step in front of the fragments. Catching one gives you a stacking effect that also hurts allies within 3 yards, which means you should name catchers and backups and keep them apart.
At 25%: save your cooldowns for the burn
At 25% Liadrin casts Last Light, which heals the whole raid to full, and gives you Luminous Grace, which boosts damage and healing. This is the moment for Bloodlust or Heroism and your big damage cooldowns. You have to kill the boss before Eightfold Eclipse finishes, because the end of that ritual kills the raid. Meanwhile, spread around the Null Gates and dodge the Nullshards; a tank with Negation uses a Null Gate to remove it.
Jobs by role
- Tanks: keep Kith’ix away from the adds, gather the adds for the raid and use a Null Gate when Negation is on you.
- Healers: heal Abyssal Grasp targets through the absorb and dispel fear only after the player has moved out.
- Damage dealers: kill adds before 100 energy, pop beetles one at a time, catch fragments when it’s your turn and keep cooldowns for 25%.
- Everyone: grab your own mote of light before every Extinguish.
Kith’ix loot table: all 10 items
These are the ten pieces of gear in the boss’s loot table, with names and effects from the 12.1.5 game client. Effects grow with item level, which is why we leave out the exact numbers.
| Item | Main stat and secondaries | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Strength, no regular secondaries | Damage can set the blade ablaze for 10 seconds, giving you Haste, and while it burns your attacks can smite the target for extra Radiant damage. | |
| Intellect, Mastery and Critical Strike | Your healing spells smite a nearby enemy and your damage spells heal a nearby ally. | |
| Mastery and Haste | Attacks can call an Acidbrood Scourge that flies into your target and explodes for Nature damage around it. | |
| Critical Strike from its effect | Damage often grants stacking Critical Strike, and once every 5 seconds your first hit on a new target gives you three stacks at once, which suits fights where you switch targets a lot. | |
| Haste from its effect | Healing can give you Haste for 15 seconds, and the lower your target’s health, the more Haste you get. | |
| Tank specializations only | Blesses the ground for 10 seconds: you get a barrier while you stand in it, and allies on it send 10% of their incoming damage to you. | |
| Intellect, Mastery and Critical Strike | Void Eruption, a bonus Shadow damage effect (see below). | |
| Agility or Intellect, Haste and Critical Strike | Void Eruption, a bonus Shadow damage effect (see below). | |
| Agility or Intellect, Critical Strike and Mastery | Void Eruption, a bonus Shadow damage effect (see below). | |
| Strength or Intellect, Mastery and Haste | Void Eruption, a bonus Shadow damage effect (see below). |
No tier set pieces drop from Kith’ix.
Early previews listed the cloth piece as a chest and the leather piece as legs. The game client now has it the other way round, cloth legs and a leather chest, so trust the table above if you read an older loot list.
Why the armor is worth a look
The four armor pieces come with an extra damage effect, which players call cantrip armor. Their effect, Void Eruption, deals Shadow damage to nearby enemies, and the test text made that damage stronger while you are Venomcursed. That bonus applies to the eruption only, not to all of your damage, so it is a nice extra but no reason to drop a strong set bonus.
All four pieces sit in tier set slots. Data miners found that the Catalyst can turn them into your class set while keeping the bonus effect, and Blizzard has said that converted items keep their secondary stats and some special effects. Before you spend a Catalyst charge, though, check the result on your own item once the raid is live.
Item level by difficulty
Kith’ix drops the same loot table on every difficulty, and only the item level changes. These are the values after Blizzard’s last change on the test server, when Mythic loot was lowered from the first preview:
| Difficulty | Group size | Item level (test server) |
|---|---|---|
| Story | Solo with NPCs | For the story, not for gear |
| Raid Finder | Queue | 285, Veteran 3/6 |
| Normal | 10–30 | 298, Champion 3/6 |
| Heroic | 10–30 | 311, Hero 3/6 |
| Mythic | 15–25 | 324, Myth 3/6 |
You may still see 344 item level and Myth 9/6 in older articles. That was the first test build, and Blizzard has lowered it since, so plan your upgrades around the numbers above. On Mythic you also don’t need exactly twenty players: the official notes confirm a flexible group of 15 to 25.
In a developer interview Blizzard said the boss is tuned to sit around the middle of The Venomous Abyss, easier than Coiled Altar and Ula’tek. That is the tuning target, and a pickup group can still struggle with it on the first night.
Liadrin’s wings, toys and other collectibles
How to get Liadrin’s wings
Libram of the Matriarch
The Libram of the Matriarch drops from Mythic Kith’ix. When you use it, you take a page from the book and get the Glyph of the Matriarch’s Wings, which changes your Avenging Wrath wings into Liadrin’s. The glyph is for paladins only.
The useful part for collectors: according to the preview item text, the libram itself is a toy that any class can collect. Once it is in your toy box, a paladin on the same account can take the glyph from it, so your Mythic main doesn’t have to be a paladin. The drop chance per kill isn’t known yet, and nothing says it is guaranteed.
Two different hearthstones
The raid has two hearthstones, and they come from different places. Shadeweaver’s Hearthstone drops from the boss, while the Hiveborne Hearthstone is the reward for Liadrin’s story quest, which you can finish on any difficulty. If you only want one of them, make sure you chase the right one.
| Collectible | How you get it |
|---|---|
| Drops from Mythic Kith’ix; gives paladins Liadrin’s wings | |
| Drops from Kith’ix | |
| Hiveborne Hearthstone | Quest reward for The Unbinding of Kith’ix, any difficulty |
| Housing decor from Kith’ix; it is bound to your Warband and goes into your House Chest | |
| Kith’ix (any difficulty), Heroic: Kith’ix and Mythic: Kith’ix, plus guild versions of all three for a kill with your guild |
We found no mount, title or separate Ahead of the Curve or Cutting Edge achievement for this raid in the preview data, so don’t expect one just because other raids have them.
How to farm Kith’ix: bonus roll, Great Vault and Venomstones
Kith’ix is a single boss, so every kill counts for a lot. These steps help you get more out of each week:
- Unlock the extra Nebulous Voidcore early. The quests In the Catalyst’s Shadow, Prismatic Potential and Umbral Blessings of the Catalyst lead to research with Orin, after which you can get one more Voidcore each week for gold, Voidlight Marl or Veteran Mistcrests.
- Set your loot specialization before you bonus roll. A bonus roll on Kith’ix costs one Voidcore and gives an item for your current loot specialization, so set it to the spec that needs the trinket or weapon most. A roll can still miss the item you want.
- Let the bonus roll protection work for you. Blizzard says items you already won through a bonus roll are removed from your possible results, so a few weeks of rolling narrows the table. We will check how well this works on Kith’ix after launch.
- Count Kith’ix toward your Great Vault. The kill counts in the raid row of the vault (Story Mode doesn’t), but that row opens at 2, 4 and 6 bosses, so one Kith’ix kill alone won’t unlock a slot. Pair it with The Venomous Abyss.
- Don’t expect Venomstones in week one. Ascendant Venomstones unlock after the quest Ascending with Venomstones in the week of October 20 (US) and October 21 (EU), and from then on Heroic and Mythic bosses drop them. Ten stones upgrade a fully upgraded Season 2 Hero- or Myth-track weapon, trinket or necklace, or an eligible maximum-quality Tidal-crafted item; the Kith’ix ring and armor can’t use them.
- Look for the Vantus Rune. The test build has a Vantus Rune for Kith’ix that adds Versatility in this fight, though we haven’t confirmed yet how you get it.
Who is Kith’ix?
Kith’ix is a C’Thraxxi, one of the old generals of the Old Gods. Long ago Loken set him and Zakajz loose to hunt the titan-forged Tyr. Tyr gave his life to stop them: Zakajz died, while Kith’ix survived wounded and fell into a long sleep.
Much later Xal’atath, through her ancient blade, steered the troll Zan’do toward the sleeping general. His followers mistook Kith’ix for an unknown loa and woke him with blood rituals, and Kith’ix led the aqir into war against the troll empires. The Amani beat him at a terrible cost, and the place where he fell became Zul’Aman. After that war the scattered aqir became the nerubians, the qiraji and the mantid.
In Midnight that old victory turns out to be unfinished. Ula’tek kept the ancient enemy bound, and her defeat in The Venomous Abyss loosens his chains, so elves and Amani have to defend their lands side by side, which is why Liadrin fights with you. Datamined items have some players asking whether Liadrin survives the story, but nothing is confirmed, so we will leave that to the raid itself.
Preparing for your first Kith’ix kill
If you raid with a guild or a regular group, the plan is simple: unlock the extra Voidcore, set your loot specialization, learn the add and fragment jobs and save your cooldowns for 25%. Raid Finder and Normal are fine places to learn the fight before your team pushes Heroic or Mythic.
Frequently asked questions
How do you unlock The Unbinding of Kith’ix?
It opens with patch 12.1.5 on October 13 in the US and October 14 in Europe. You need a level 90 character; on the Coiled Isle, the entrance waits deep in the Underbelly of the Vaults of Atal’Utek. Liadrin’s story quest sends you into Story Mode, and Raid Finder, Normal, Heroic and Mythic go through the Group Finder or your own group.
How many bosses are in the Kith’ix raid?
One. The Unbinding of Kith’ix is a single-boss raid: you fight Kith’ix with Lady Liadrin on your side.
Does Kith’ix drop tier set pieces?
No. He drops ten pieces of gear: four armor pieces with a bonus Shadow damage effect, two swords, a ring and three trinkets. The armor sits in tier slots, so data miners expect the Catalyst to turn it into your class set.
What item level does Kith’ix loot drop on each difficulty?
On the test server: Raid Finder 285, Normal 298, Heroic 311 and Mythic 324 (Myth 3/6). The 344 item level from the first test build is outdated.
How do you get Liadrin’s wings?
Kill Kith’ix on Mythic and hope for the Libram of the Matriarch. It is a toy that gives the Glyph of the Matriarch’s Wings, which turns paladin Avenging Wrath wings into Liadrin’s. Any class can collect the toy, so a paladin alt can use it later. The drop chance is not known.
Where does Shadeweaver’s Hearthstone come from?
It drops from Kith’ix. The other new hearthstone, the Hiveborne Hearthstone, is the reward for Liadrin’s story quest, which you can finish on any difficulty.
Can you bonus roll on Kith’ix and does it count for the Great Vault?
Yes. A bonus roll costs one Nebulous Voidcore and gives loot for your current loot specialization. The kill counts in the raid row of the Great Vault (Story Mode does not), but that row needs 2, 4 or 6 bosses, so pair Kith’ix with The Venomous Abyss.
Who is Kith’ix in WoW?
A C’Thraxxi, an old general of the Old Gods. He survived his fight with Tyr, later led the aqir against the troll empires and was beaten by the Amani on the ground that became Zul’Aman. Ula’tek’s defeat in Midnight loosens his chains.
