WoW Talebound Guide: Classes, Tales and Rewards
Talebound is the new standalone roguelike mode in WoW Midnight, and it arrives with patch 12.1.7, Echoes of the Worldcore. You create a fresh character, pick one of three new classes and fight through short horror stories told by a mysterious Storyteller. Your main character never enters the mode, while the cosmetics you earn there go to your whole Warband, so the mode is worth a look even if you only play Retail.
Patch 12.1.7 is on the PTR, and Blizzard hasn’t announced its release date yet. We wrote this guide on November 2, 2026, right after the public demo, and anything marked PTR may change before release. We’ll update it when Talebound goes live. Everything else the patch brings is in our patch 12.1.7 guide.
What is Talebound in WoW?
Talebound is a PvE action RPG that runs inside the WoW client but has its own world, characters and combat. You play a lone traveler whom the Storyteller pulls into his tales, and between attempts you rest in Quillgrave, a lantern-lit village. Every tale has its own levels with enemies, puzzles, treasure, relics and bosses. You’ll replay tales many times, because the upgrades you buy in town after each run make the next attempt easier.

Talebound classes: Slayer, Inquisitor and Witch
All three classes can double jump, dodge and guard, so where you stand matters much more than in normal WoW combat. Each class starts with a three-hit combo and five abilities, and the talents you unlock in Quillgrave change how those abilities work.
Slayer
The Slayer fights with a sword and a gun. Slash stuns on its third hit and Explosive Shot does more damage the closer you stand, so you’ll spend most fights up close. When you need room, Minefield throws you backward and leaves mines that slow enemies, and Throwing Knives moves you quickly and can cancel other attacks. Pick him if you like melee with a shotgun as backup.
Inquisitor
The Inquisitor burns enemies with holy fire from mid-range. Condemn and Radiant Burst work while you move, while Denounce hits harder the longer you stand still, so this class is about choosing the right moment to plant your feet. Rapture sets enemies on fire, and the flames explode when you choose.
Witch
The Witch is the caster of the three and uses lightning, poison, spiders and ravens. Bubbling Cauldron sends out frogs that leap at enemies and explode, Winter Spiders send a swarm forward, and Moonlight Ravens can be channelled while you move. Feline Communion briefly makes you a cat, and Crooked Path blinks you forward out of danger. She suits players who enjoy area damage and summons.
Nobody can rank the classes yet, because Blizzard says several talents are still unfinished and tuning is ongoing. Pick the style you enjoy, since you’ll replay the same tales with it many times.
How to start Talebound
In the PTR demo, you installed the 12.1.7 test client, and character selection offered to create a Talebound character. You could also switch with the Mode button at the top of that screen. Blizzard hasn’t described the live entry yet, so we expect the same route through character selection, but that isn’t confirmed.
Your story starts in Red Hollow. You’re a traveler on a dark road who meets the Storyteller, and he drags you into the stories he invents. After this introduction you reach Quillgrave, where you rest, upgrade and pick your next tale.
Four tales and their bosses
| Tale | Bosses | In the demo |
|---|---|---|
| Darkhaven | Konrad von Sonnesheim, the Lord Marshal, and Alexandre Dozsenc, the Blood Bishop | Yes |
| Greenthistle Wood | Granny Greenthumb, Ylska Vilefang and Mobog, the Giant of Greenthistle | Yes |
| Greywake’s Expedition | Zzyg’th, the Hadal Tyrant, and Chathoa, the Herald from Beyond | Yes |
| Grove of the Night Court | Tilywth, the Fairy Queen, and Maernok, the Nightmare King | No |

Every tale has Normal, Veteran and Heroic difficulty. Blizzard hasn’t said how the harder ones unlock. Datamining also shows a Mythic difficulty that wasn’t part of the demo (on the PTR, may change before release).
Progress between runs: Ducats and Bound Silver
After every run, failed or not, you go back to Quillgrave and spend what you found with four specialists, who make your next attempt stronger.
- The Arcanist adds potions, draughts and flasks that you can find during a tale.
- The Scribe gives talents that change your abilities.
- The Outfitter raises your starting health, damage, energy and focus.
- The Antiquarian offers passive effects that change how you approach a tale.
You pick up Ducats inside the tales and convert them into the resources these specialists need. They stay in Talebound and buy nothing in Retail. Exchange rates and caps are still unknown.
Bound Silver is the currency that matters for your main game. It’s Warband-bound and comes from quests, achievements and progress in the tales, and you spend it on transmog sets, single pieces and other cosmetics in the Talebound store. The store opens from character selection or the Game Menu, and in Quillgrave you can visit Nib. Final prices and the full catalogue aren’t known yet.
Blizzard hasn’t said whether demo progress carries over to the live mode, so we’d plan on starting from zero.
Talebound rewards
Confirmed by Blizzard
- Shadowbound Storybook mount
- Ensemble: Witch Hunter’s Shadow Attire transmog set
- Quillgrave Storyteller’s Lectern and Quillgrave Talebound Shadowtome housing decor
Blizzard says there’s “much more” to use in Midnight and later, and the full list will come with the release.
Found on the PTR
Datamining adds pets such as Hex-Cursed Manifestation, Inquisitor’s Messenger, Slayer’s Faithful Tracker and Zyg’ee, plus the titles Monster Hunter, of the Sacred Flame, of the Crooked Path and Listener. More mounts appear in the files too, but their names have changed between builds. All of this is on the PTR and may change before release.
The files also link Talebound to rewards with real power in Retail, like Venomstones, bonus-roll currency, crests and experience potions. Two achievements, Confronting a Mythic Tale and Mythic: The Comprehensive Final Confrontation, show a Cache of Mythic Treasures, which datamining connects to Mythic loot from the Venomous Abyss. Blizzard hasn’t confirmed any of it, and the sites that found it say it may change.
Even if the caches go live, they’d give you two pieces you don’t pick. If you need specific Mythic items from the Venomous Abyss this season, a raid run with the bosses and loot rules you choose is the more direct route.
What the PTR demo showed
The public demo ran from October 30 into early November 2026 and included Red Hollow, three tales, all three classes and three difficulties. Players liked the gothic look, the narration, the puzzles and exploring the levels. The common complaints were about controls: attacks lock you into their animation, so a dodge often comes too late, and the camera gets caught behind walls. There’s no map or objective marker, so some testers walked in circles looking for the next boss, and several asked for controller support.
A few players also said that leaving a tale reset the whole instance, even though tooltips suggested you could come back. Blizzard hasn’t replied to this feedback yet, so the next PTR builds will show what changes.
Tips for your first Talebound runs
- Practise dodge and guard before you think about damage. Attacks commit you to their animation, so start a long combo only when the enemy isn’t about to hit you.
- Use the abilities that work on the move, like Throwing Knives, Condemn, Radiant Burst and Moonlight Ravens, because they keep you safe while you deal damage.
- Go back to town and spend after every run, even a failed one. If you die early, the Outfitter’s health and damage help most, and when you survive but kill too slowly, look at the Scribe’s talents.
- Check side rooms for treasure and relics, and note landmarks on the way, since there’s no map to lead you back.
- Finish a tale in one go. In the demo, leaving could reset your run.
- Play bosses and puzzles with friends if you can, because two more players cover each other’s mistakes. Groups will likely be capped at three.
- Do the quests and achievements too, since they pay Bound Silver on top of what you earn by finishing tales.
