WoW Skyriding Guide
World of Warcraft offers two ways to use a flying mount: active Skyriding and classic Steady Flight. Skyriding began as Dragonriding in Dragonflight and later became available on many more flying mounts. This guide covers controls, unlocks, glyphs and mount compatibility.
Skyriding rewards momentum: dive to build speed and climb to gain height. Steady Flight is the simpler option when you want to travel at a consistent pace.

Skyriding Basics
Skyriding uses movement and momentum, while Steady Flight uses traditional flying controls. You can change the active flight style in the Mount Journal. In places where flying is permitted, Skyriding works with mounts marked as compatible.
Skyriding no longer relies on the old Vigor gauge. Its core movement abilities use shared charges, so focus on your route and spend a charge when you need to regain height or speed.
Unlocking Skyriding and Switching Flight Styles
Skyriding is learned early in character progression. Open the Mount Journal to see the Skyriding skills and the Switch Flight Style control. Once you have learned that control, use it to move between Skyriding and Steady Flight for eligible flying mounts.
Some zones have their own flight unlock conditions. Check the zone's current requirements if a flight style is unavailable there; an old Khaz Algar campaign requirement does not describe every area of Azeroth.
How to Use Your Mounts for Skyriding
- Open the Mount Journal from your collections.
- Choose a flying mount marked for Skyriding.
- Use Switch Flight Style when you want Steady Flight instead.
Skyriding Glyphs
Glyphs remain collectibles in areas such as Khaz Algar, where finding them can contribute to zone achievements. They are not required to unlock the Skyriding talent tree or improve your flight abilities. If you are learning to fly, you can leave glyph hunting for later.
The old zone-by-zone glyph count is a historical collection checklist, not a requirement for current flight progression.
Skyriding Skills
Open the Skyriding skills pane from the Mount Journal. Many former talent choices became passive, and collecting glyphs no longer gates the tree. Start with the basic movement abilities and practice climbing after a dive instead of searching for an old talent build.
If an older guide asks you to collect glyphs before using a flight ability, that instruction refers to an earlier version of Dragonriding.
Skyriding Mounts
Most flying mounts can use Skyriding, but there are exceptions. Your Mount Journal identifies compatible mounts; a fixed list or mount count from an earlier expansion can miss later additions. A mount that does not support Skyriding stays grounded while that flight style is active.
How to check your mount:
- Open the Mount Journal and look for the Skyriding indicator on a flying mount.
- If your preferred mount cannot Skyride, choose another compatible mount or switch flight styles where Steady Flight is available.
Skyriding for Druid Flight Form
Druid Flight Form can use Skyriding. When flying is permitted, check the active flight style in the Mount Journal if the form does not behave as expected.
- For active flight: Select Skyriding to use its momentum-based movement in Flight Form.
- For traditional flight: Use Switch Flight Style to return to Steady Flight where it is available.
