Moophisto, the Divine Bovine, bellowing next to a giant glowing sword in the Bovine Sanctum

Moophisto in Diablo 4: How to Summon the Cow God and What He Drops

Moophisto, the Divine Bovine, is the cow god waiting behind the whole Secret Cow Level story. In Season 15 you can fight him again and again: bring 5 Prime Ribs to the Altar of the Heifer in his Bovine Sanctum and he shows up. Most players come back for his rare cosmetics, above all the pet Marquis Milky, and for the amulet that makes the rest of the cow hunt a lot easier.

Hover over or tap an item name to see its tooltip. The card shows the values from the game data.

Quick version

  • Cost: 5 Prime Ribs per summon. The first altar on the mainland only takes you to the island, the second one in the arena eats the Ribs.
  • First Ribs: the Butcher quest in Old Tristram gives exactly 5, enough for one fight, without the Cow Level.
  • More Ribs: farm the Cow King inside the Secret Cow Level, reset, repeat. Players report 1 to 3 Ribs per kill.
  • Where: Tyrael's Encampment in Skovos, then east to the Altar of the Heifer.
  • Worth it for: Marquis Milky, Brisket of the Bovine, Figment of Imoogination and Bell of the Bovine. The pet is very rare.
  • You need: the Lord of Hatred expansion, because Skovos is part of it, and a Season 15 seasonal character. Players on Eternal report there's no summoning altar there.

Hunting the pet for hours? Farm Moophisto with a booster: for the hours you book, a booster with a strong character plays next to you, so Cow King runs and summons go faster. The route below works solo too.

Event boss or Sanctum boss: which Moophisto is this?

Moophisto has shown up in two different ways, and most of the confusion online comes from mixing them up. Until September 14, he took over the World Boss spot for a community event. Everyone fought him in the open world, the community had to beat him 300,000 times together, and the reward for that was the Moomento Mori mount trophy. The screenshots with piles of Mythic Uniques you may have seen are from that event, which handed out a special cache full of Mythics.

The version you can still fight today lives in the Bovine Sanctum, an island you reach from Skovos, and you call him yourself with Prime Ribs whenever you want. His loot is different from the event, so don't expect the old Mythic rain.

Step 1: Get your Prime Ribs

Prime Ribs are the only thing you need to summon him. Each summon takes five, so plan your first fight around one of these two sources.

Your first five: the Butcher quest in Old Tristram

If you haven't solved the cow riddle yet, this is the easiest way in. It runs through Deckard's Journey, a Season 15 side story, and ends with a quest that pays exactly 5 Prime Ribs:

  1. Collect the 10 Deckard's Journals. They're spread across Sanctuary: near Gea Kul, in the Imperial Library, in the Kehjistan desert, at Wejinhani, by Lorath's hut, near the Hidden Overlook, at Marowen, Braestaig, Oldstones and Yelesna. Players say they appear once you've been to Tarsarak, so you don't need to finish the season story first.
  2. Go back to the Imperial Library in Caldeum and finish Deckard's Journey.
  3. Step into Deckard's Memory. It takes you to Old Tristram.
  4. Talk to the Wounded Townsman next to the Cathedral and take his quest.
  5. Kill the Butcher for that quest and pick up your Prime Ribs.

The Ribs come from the quest, not from the Butcher himself. Players who went back to farm the regular Butcher didn't get any, so it only works as a one-time start. While you're in Old Tristram, you can also grab Ogden's Sign for a separate quest with its own reward. It has nothing to do with Moophisto, but it's right there.

Every five after that: the Cow King

For repeat summons you farm the Cow King behind the Cow Level portal: kill him, leave, reset the dungeon and go back in. Players report 1 to 3 Ribs per kill, but guides don't agree on the exact number, so count what you actually pick up and stop once you have five or more.

The Moo shortcut into the Cow Level

You need access to the Secret Cow Level to farm the Cow King. The full cow quest is long, but there's a shortcut if you know someone who has already done it:

  1. A player who has unlocked the Moo emote uses it right next to you.
  2. Go to the Holy Cedar Tablets outside Kyovashad and pick the option to carve "Moo" into the wood.
  3. Travel to Skovos and find the Cow Level portal north of Fool's Quarry.

The shortcut only gets you into the fight. Your own Moo emote, the title and the achievement for the cow quest still need the full chain, so do it if you want those.

Step 2: Summon Moophisto

There are two altars with the same name, Altar of the Heifer, and only the second one takes your Ribs:

  1. Have 5 Prime Ribs in your inventory.
  2. Teleport to Tyrael's Encampment in Skovos.
  3. Walk east to the first Altar of the Heifer and use it. It moves you to the Bovine Sanctum, and your Ribs stay in your bag.
  4. Unlock the Sanctum waypoint straight away, so next time you can skip the walk.
  5. Head north into the arena and use the second altar. This one takes 5 Ribs and calls Moophisto.

Some early guides said you need 6 Ribs. That came from people mixing up the two altars. The altar itself says it needs 5, and players have since confirmed it. The island also has its own cow blacksmith, jeweler and occultist, which is a nice touch if you need to fix gear between fights.

Other players can join a fight that one person paid for. If you farm with friends, agree on who brings the Ribs each time, because players complain about people who only ever wait for someone else's summon.

How to beat Moophisto

Moophisto is a joke boss with real attacks. A build that handles World Bosses on your Torment level is fine, as long as you know these moves:

  • The stampede steals your skills. When his herd hits you, some of your skill buttons turn into a forced "Moo". Press the changed button until it clears, or you'll find your escape skill locked right when you need it.
  • Hide behind the swords for the Divine Bellow. Big swords fall from the sky during the fight and stay stuck in the ground. When he walks to the middle of the arena, his huge bellow is coming, so get behind one of them fast. His other attacks can break the swords, so don't count on the one you used last time.
  • Step out of the growing line. Split the Earth draws a line on the ground that keeps getting longer. Leave it while it grows, because the blast comes at the end.
  • Watch where he lands. Divine Slam is a leap that sends a ring of force outward, and Divine Rain marks spots on the ground before light hits them. Keep moving and you avoid both.
  • Don't drag it out. The fight has a timer: the game warns "Moophisto will escape soon", and guides put the limit at about 15 minutes. If you die, you can run back in and the boss keeps his health, but the clock keeps running.

What Moophisto drops

Blizzard hasn't published a loot table or any drop rates, so everything below comes from players and guides. The cosmetics are the reason most people keep coming back:

Reward What it is How you get it
Figment of ImooginationMount trophy. Its text says "There is no cow level."Guides say it drops on the first kill.
Brisket of the BovineChest piece of the cow armor set (cosmetic)Random drop, players got it after anywhere from a few to 150+ kills.
Marquis MilkySmall cow pet with a crownRandom and very rare, no guaranteed kill count.
Bell of the BovineUnique amulet that summons exploding cowsRandom drop. Players report it again since the October 2 loot fix.
Udder's MilkElixir with a damage bonus and extra movement speedRandom drop.

On top of that, players report the usual endgame loot: runes, Talisman pieces, sigils, Crux and Tributes, sometimes even a Mythic Tribute. One screenshot we received from the arena shows an Infernal Hordes Compass, five Chronicles of Nightmares (the keys for the Season 15 Waking Nightmares dungeons), a Tribute and a Greater Tribute of Refinement and the rune Cem on the ground. That's a nice bonus, but nobody has shown that Moophisto beats a normal Mythic farm. If you're after Mythics, our Mythic Uniques guide has the better routes.

Udder's Milk is a funny one. The elixir's text talks about bonus damage to "the deadliest creatures of Sanctuary", and players report that in practice the bonus works on cows. Don't save it for your next Pinnacle boss.

Bell of the Bovine: the drop that speeds up the cow hunt

is a unique amulet that makes you moo and blows up cows:

  • Lucky Hit: up to a 30% chance to Moo when you hit an enemy.
  • Lucky Moo: up to a 50% chance that your Moo summons a cow that explodes for Fire damage.
  • The exploding cows deal 50% more damage on Tuesdays, and the amulet's fixed line says Mondays now count as Tuesdays. Yes, really, it's written on the item.

You won't keep it in your endgame build. It shines in the cow quest, whose early part asks you to kill a lot of cows, and the cows you summon with the Bell count. Players found that wearing it in dense packs, for example in a Helltide, turns that slow part into a short session.

That gives you a neat route if you're starting from zero: get your first fight through the Butcher quest or a friend's Moo, hope for the Bell, then use it to finish your own cow quest. You end up with your own emote and achievement, plus Cow Level access for every Rib you'll need later.

How rare is Marquis Milky, and why did I get nothing?

Nobody knows the real drop rate, and you should be careful with any number you see. On the official forum, one player got the pet in under 50 kills and the chest after more than 150. Another got the pet at around 250 kills and the chest about 100 kills later. A third gave up after roughly 150 fights without either. By October 10, a few players were at 450 to 900 kills without the pet and asked Blizzard to confirm that it drops at all, and Blizzard hasn't answered yet. Those are single stories, not a drop table, so there's no fixed count of kills that guarantees the pet.

Early in the season, many players also got nothing at all from him. Blizzard fixed Moophisto's wrong loot in the hotfix of October 2, and since then the forum has fresh reports of pets and chests. If a kill still feels empty, check these first:

  • Your loot filter. Make sure it doesn't hide cosmetics or the item types listed above.
  • Pick things up right away. One player saw the pet drop and lose it before grabbing it.
  • Stop if it keeps happening. If several kills in a row give nothing, don't burn more Ribs. Note your realm, difficulty and party, and try again later.

Players connect that fix to a lockout: right after a World Boss kill, Moophisto used to drop nothing for 30 to 45 minutes. Blizzard's note doesn't say so, but if your kills go empty right after a World Boss, wait a while before you spend more Ribs.

The cow armor set: Moophisto gives one piece

Brisket of the Bovine is only one part of a five-piece cosmetic cow set, and the other pieces come from elsewhere. Players found the legs (Sirloin of the Bovine) on the Cow King and fished the boots (Hooves of the Bovine) on Cow Island. The head (Head of the Bovine) comes from another cow secret, and nobody has confirmed where the gloves, Foreshanks of the Bovine, come from yet, so Moophisto alone won't complete the outfit.

The hint on the Cow King's Crown

Months before anyone could fight him, the text on The Cow King's Crown already named him:

"We need just wait for the final decade to pass. By three, they come. By three thy pen opens. With the cud of the willing, we call thee home."

The Cow King, Hoof of Moophisto. Flavor text of The Cow King's Crown

The Prime Rib's own line, a worthy offering "even to a god", pointed the same way. Players spotted the hint in May and started looking for a cow god long before the Sanctum opened. The German client has its own pun on the name, too: there he's called Meviehsto, from "Vieh", the German word for cattle.

Farm Moophisto with a booster

The pet is a long grind, and most of that time goes into Cow King runs for Ribs. With Hourly Driving, a booster with a strong character plays next to you for the hours you book, so both parts go faster and every drop lands in your own game.

  • Faster Cow King kills, so you get to the next five Ribs sooner.
  • You decide what the hours are for: Rib runs, Moophisto summons, the cow quest with the Bell, or something else entirely.
  • Switch tasks in the same booking, for example from Ribs to gear farming once your pet drops.
  • You play your own character and the booster joins with theirs, so you don't share your account. We only need your BattleTag.

You need a Season 15 seasonal Softcore character, since players on Eternal report there's no summoning altar there. Solo Self-Found characters can't join a party, so they're out too.

Short version: get your first 5 Ribs from the Butcher quest, take the free altar to the island and the paid one to the fight, hide behind the swords and farm the Cow King for every summon after that. If you'd rather not spend your evenings on Ribs, book a booster for the hours you need and farm the cow god together.

FAQ

Bring 5 Prime Ribs to Tyrael's Encampment in Skovos and walk east to the Altar of the Heifer. It takes you to the Bovine Sanctum without using the Ribs. In the arena to the north, the second Altar of the Heifer takes the 5 Ribs and summons Moophisto.

Five. The altar asks for 5 Prime Ribs and only the second altar in the arena uses them. The number 6 comes from early guides that mixed up the two altars.

Your first 5 come from the Butcher quest in Old Tristram, which you reach through Deckard's Memory after Deckard's Journey. After that, farm Prime Ribs from the Cow King, who waits inside the Secret Cow Level. Players report 1 to 3 Ribs per kill.

Guides say the Figment of Imoogination mount trophy comes with the first kill. Other drops are random: the chest piece Brisket of the Bovine, the Marquis Milky pet, the Bell of the Bovine amulet and the Udder's Milk elixir, plus runes, Talisman pieces, sigils and Tributes. Blizzard hasn't published drop rates.

Very rare, and the real drop rate is unknown. Players on the official forum got it after anywhere from under 50 to around 250 kills, and others are still without it after 150 or more. No kill count guarantees it. By October 10, some players were at 450 to 900 kills without it and asked Blizzard to confirm it drops at all.

Players on Eternal report that the island is there but the summoning altar is not. Plan your Moophisto farm on a Season 15 seasonal character.

Yes. The Bovine Sanctum is reached from Skovos, the region of the Lord of Hatred expansion, and the Prime Rib itself is marked as a Lord of Hatred item.

Early in the season his loot was broken, and Blizzard fixed it in the hotfix of October 2, 2026. If a kill still looks empty, check your loot filter, pick up drops right away and stop spending Prime Ribs if several kills in a row give nothing.

No. A friend's Moo emote and the tablets outside Kyovashad get you into the Secret Cow Level, but your own Moo emote, title and achievement still need the full cow quest.
