Diablo, Baal and Mephisto rise over Tristram Cathedral as a lone wanderer approaches

Diablo 4 Season 15 Guide: Season of Hell's Legacy

Diablo turns 30, and Blizzard threw the party inside Diablo 4. Season of Hell's Legacy sends you back through the whole series: Tristram Cathedral, Arreat Summit, the Durance of Hate and plenty of bosses you haven't seen in years. On top of the nostalgia you get real new power: a Prime Evil to carry, demonic gems with a catch, classic Uniques and even Diablo II runewords.

This guide covers what's new, how the season works and what to do first, so you spend your evenings slaying demons instead of reading tooltips.

Season 15 at a glance

  • Dates: live since September 15, 2026. The in-game season timer counts down to December 1, 2026, so the whole season runs about 11 weeks.
  • Main loop: finish Deckard Cain's questline, choose one Prime Evil to carry, then farm the activities it boosts.
  • New gear: Soul Splinters for your jewelry, nine Legacy Uniques and 19 Legacy Runewords from Diablo II.
  • Do you need the expansion? No, the season is open to everyone. About 15% of Season Rank objectives need Lord of Hatred, including the ones for Rank VIII.

Start here: Deckard Cain's questline

Old friend, bad timing: Deckard Cain is back as a lost soul, and he brings a warning. Three heroes who once carried the Prime Evils inside them are walking Sanctuary again, leaving bodies behind. Your job is to step into their worst memories and kill the echo of the demon that broke each one:

  • Baal at Arreat Summit, in the Worldstone Keep. Reward: Splinter of Destruction.
  • Mephisto in the Durance of Hate. Reward: Splinter of Hatred.
  • Diablo beneath Tristram Cathedral. Reward: Splinter of Terror.

You bring all three back to Cain in the Imperial Library and pick the one you want to carry. The questline also pays good XP and gold, so it's a solid way to level a fresh character.

Tip: some players got stuck in the questline after rushing into the Worldstone Chamber portal. Walk in calmly and give the fight a second to load. Blizzard is fixing this.

Splinters of Evil: which Prime Evil should you carry?

A wanderer holds a soul shard as fire, ice and ghost spirits of the three Prime Evils burst from it

Carrying a Splinter makes you a dark wanderer. In combat, the Prime Evil's power bursts out of you on its own every few seconds. The catch: you also take more damage from that same Prime Evil. You can carry only one Splinter at a time.

Splinter Prime Evil Power Boosts
Terror Diablo Flames of Metus, lines of fire Helltide, Infernal Hordes
Destruction Baal Ice of Excidium, a cold blast The Undercity, Lair Bosses
Hatred Mephisto Ghosts of Odium, physical damage The Pit, Nightmare Dungeons

All three also improve the Tree of Whispers.

How to choose

Pick the activity you'll actually play, not the demon you like most.

  • Pushing the Pit and leveling Glyphs? Take Hatred. It makes Nightmare Dungeons and the Pit faster and more rewarding.
  • Farming bosses for Uniques and Mythics? Take Destruction. Its upgrades give bosses a chance at an extra trophy, and later ranks add runes and Unique items to Lair Boss chests.
  • Relaxed farming in Helltide and Infernal Hordes? Take Terror. Its power drops extra Aberrant Cinders in Helltide and extra Aether in Infernal Hordes.

Reputation and upgrades

Every Splinter has its own reputation track with 24 ranks. You earn reputation by clearing Waking Nightmares and killing Remnants, the echoes of past horrors that belong to your Prime Evil.

  • Your power gets six upgrades. The first arrives almost at once (rank 2), the last one waits at the very end (rank 24).
  • Eight activity bonuses spread across the track. You set them up in your War Plans.
  • Rank 24 needs 20,000 reputation and gives the final upgrade plus a cache with a Resplendent Spark.

Changed your mind? The biggest Waking Nightmares can drop a different Splinter. Using it replaces your current one, but each track keeps its own progress, so switching doesn't wipe what you've earned.

Waking Nightmares

Waking Nightmares are memories of famous moments from Diablo's past, rebuilt for Diablo 4. They come in three sizes:

  • Large: multi-level dungeons that replay the big fights with the Prime Evils. You meet them in the questline and can replay them on Torment for loot. From Torment X up they also exist as the hardest version, with bigger risk and better rewards.
  • Medium: normal-length dungeons at fixed spots on the map, like the Den of Evil from Diablo II or Lester's Farm from Hellfire.
  • Small: one-room fights that pop up in the open world, for example the spider queen Araneae or a wave of Flayers.

Small ones are quick. If one appears on your route, jump in.

Soul Splinters: power with a price

Soul Splinters are this season's gems, and every one of them is a deal with a demon: a big bonus with a nasty side effect attached. Your amulet and rings hold three of them at most.

There are eight, sorted here by who they belong to:

Whose power Soul Splinters
Lesser Evils of Diablo IIDuriel: Splinter of Pain. Andariel: Splinter of Anguish.
Lesser Evils of Diablo IIIBelial: Splinter of Lies. Azmodan: Splinter of Sin.
Diablo IV and Diablo ImmortalLilith: Splinter of the Mother. Skarn: Splinter of Damnation.
Hellfire and an artifactNa-Krul: Splinter of Hellfire. And the Black Soulstone itself.

Blue, yellow, orange or gold: they come in four qualities. Got duplicates? Throw matching ones (same name, same quality) into the Horadric Cube, pick Amalgamation and you get one a tier higher.

Tip: read the drawback before the bonus. In Blizzard's preview, the Unique Splinter of Hellfire gives 50% more damage but takes away all of your Critical Strike Chance. Great for some builds, a disaster for a crit build.

Legacy Uniques and Diablo II runewords

Nine Legacy Uniques from older Diablo games join the loot pool. They stay in the game after the season, on both Seasonal and Eternal Realms:

  • Jewelry and armor anyone can wear: the Stone of Jordan ring, once so rare that Diablo II players traded with it like money; the Skeleton King's own Leoric's Crown; Nemesis Bracers; and a chest piece built around Squirt's Necklace.
  • Weapons for specific classes: Messerschmidt's Reaver, the axe of Prince Aidan; The Furnace, a two-handed mace; the sword In-Geom; the polearm Arioc's Needle; and Henri's Perquisition, a focus for casters.

All of them except Leoric's Crown and Messerschmidt's Reaver also exist as Unique Charms.

And a surprise nobody announced: 19 runewords from Diablo II are back, including Enigma, Grief, Spirit, Infinity, Call to Arms and Stealth. Forget sockets. Find a plain white item of the right type, drop it in the Cube together with the runes of the recipe, and out comes a finished Unique. Spare low runes aren't junk either: the Cube merges three of a kind into the next rune up.

  • Easy early pick: Stealth, made from Tal + Eth on chest armor.
  • Endgame chase: Enigma, made from Jah + Ith + Ber on chest armor.

Mythic crafting and new Cube recipes

Good news for anyone who hates gambling: Mythics are now mostly a choice, not a dice roll. You have three workbenches:

  • The Cube: turns the exact Unique you already perfected into its Mythic version. Every affix, temper and masterwork survives. It costs the most, and the item is marked Crafted: you can wear just one piece with that mark.
  • The Jeweler: you choose the slot, the game chooses the Mythic. No Crafted mark.
  • The Blacksmith: a random Mythic for your class, or a separate cache that only gives Iconic Mythics at the same cost. No Crafted mark either.

Tip: the Cube upgrade doesn't work on Unmodifiable items. Don't Transfigure the item you plan to turn into a Mythic.

Two new Cube recipes help you fix bad rolls:

  • Affix Value Reroll: new numbers on the base stats of gear, Charms and Seals. Your Greater Affixes, enchants, tempers and transfigurations are safe.
  • Horadric Reroll: works on Charms and Seals of Legendary quality or higher. It rerolls the base stats completely, while the set bonus and the Unique power stay as they are.

Quality of life: War Plans, Rebirth, Horadric Post

Shared War Plans

War Plans reputation is now shared between your characters, as long as they match on all three: Seasonal or Eternal, Softcore or Hardcore, normal or Solo Self-Found. Every character still has its own planner, so each one can spend the points its own way.

Hardcore tip: points only move to Eternal with a character that is alive when the season ends. Keep a level 1 Hardcore character in the same mode as a safe "storage" hero.

Rebirth

Rebirth moves an Eternal character into the season and resets it to level 1. Class, name, look and Hardcore status stay. Before you click it, move all gear and items to your Eternal stash. The button stays locked until the character is empty, and anything left behind is lost.

A new mailbox for your account. From time to time it delivers rewards, supplies and commemorative items. Check it after big updates.

Secret: the Echo of Tristram (spoilers)

Players found a hidden chase that Blizzard didn't announce. Here's how it works, based on community guides:

  1. Finish the seasonal questline.
  2. Find all 10 of Deckard's Journals across Sanctuary. Cain then opens a portal to Old Tristram, the village from Diablo I.
  3. Collect a Splinter of Terror, a Splinter of Destruction and a Splinter of Hatred as drops. They can fall anywhere, but most often from the bosses of the big Waking Nightmares on Torment X and above.
  4. Combine the three in the Horadric Cube to get Wirt's Lucky Coin.
  5. Use the coin at the fountain in Tristram and face Diablo, Baal and Mephisto together.

The big prize is the Hellfire Torch, a Mythic Charm. It lets you unlock the 5-piece bonus of one talisman set with only 4 pieces. The set it boosts is random, so expect to farm it more than once. On September 22 Blizzard fixed a bug where the fountain ate your coin without opening the portal.

Season Rank, Blessings and the Battle Pass

Season Rank has 9 ranks and 125 objectives. The rewards are shared across your account:

  • Power: extra Skill and Paragon points (up to 14 and 42) plus five Mythic caches.
  • Crafting: Resplendent Sparks for Mythics, up to ten, and a pile of materials, keys, runes, Charms and Seals.
  • Show-off stuff: a Dark Wanderbear pet, the Banner of the Three mount trophy, titles and emblems.

Objectives also give you Smoldering Ashes for Season Blessings. Each Blessing is an urn with a small, useful boost:

  • Pushing Glyphs in the Pit? Urn of Glyphs, for a chance at a bonus Glyph level.
  • Masterworking your gear? Urn of Masterworking, for more Obducite.
  • Gambling at the Purveyor? Urn of Curiosities, for a chance at a free second item.
  • Salvaging a lot? Urn of Reclamation, for more rare materials.
  • Running Whispers? Urn of Ancestral Whispers, for a chance at an extra Ancestral cache.

The free Battle Pass has the Eidolon mount and its armor. The Armor Reliquary has a unique armor set for each class for the first time.

Your first week: a simple plan

A hero at dawn looking over Sanctuary before setting out
Time to set out. Illustration: MMonster
  1. Create a Seasonal character, or empty an Eternal one and use Rebirth.
  2. Play Cain's questline to the end and collect all three Splinters.
  3. Choose the Splinter that boosts the activity you'll farm most.
  4. Do Season Rank objectives that happen in that same activity. Two rewards for one run.
  5. Craft Stealth early if you have Tal and Eth.
  6. Keep every Soul Splinter. Duplicates become better ones through Amalgamation.
  7. Spend Smoldering Ashes on the Blessing that fits your farm.
  8. Save Mythic crafting for an item that is already rolled and tempered the way you want.

Conclusion

Season of Hell's Legacy is a love letter to 30 years of Diablo, and it's also one of the most generous seasons so far. Pick the Prime Evil that fits how you play, read every Soul Splinter's drawback and don't skip the Tristram secret. See you in the Cathedral.
