Speed comes from the beast, not the family, and only a few beasts swing faster than 2.0 seconds. Derived from their Classic swing speed.
In the beta a pet's damage per hit does not shrink with its speed, so faster pets deal more damage per second. At level 20 a 1.6 sec pet did about 25 DPS, a 2.5 sec pet about 18.8.

What is the best hunter pet for leveling?
Boar or Bear: lots of armor and health, an opener or a hit on several enemies, and almost any food.
Is there a hunter pet tier list?
Yes, at the top of this page: the families by damage and as a tank. Within a family the beast's speed matters most in the beta, so the fastest beasts are listed below it.
Which hunter pet does the most damage?
A cat or a raptor with +10% damage, ideally a fast one. Broken Tooth attacks every 1.0 seconds, The Rake every 1.2 seconds already at level 10.
