WoW Forever vs Classic: what changes from Classic Era
WoW Forever keeps Classic’s level 60 cap and its old world, still with no flying and no level scaling, but rebuilds most systems around them. Every class gets new talent trees, the Skyborne race and six new race and class pairs arrive, nine new dungeons join the old ones, and Legacy Points, rulesets and a modern interface are new.

What stays the same
Under all the new systems the game still plays like Classic in these points.
The level cap is 60 at launch, as in Classic.
No flying mounts and no level scaling: every zone keeps its fixed level range.
Horde and Alliance still cannot group with each other.
The old world stays. Forever puts its new quests on top of the Classic quests instead of replacing them.
Hunters still use Mana, buy ammo, feed their pet and have a dead zone right next to them.
Classes and talents
Every class plays differently now. These rules apply to all nine, the table below gives each class its biggest change.
Talent trees keep their rows and the milestones at 11, 21 and 31 points, and gain a new one at 16 points.
Divine Spirit, Blessing of Kings and Improved Mark of the Wild are no longer talents: you train them, or they are built in.
Spell, melee and ranged hit are one stat now, and the three crit chances are one stat too.
Bonus healing also adds a third as much spell damage, caster weapons carry spell damage and healing, and weapon skill on items is lower.
| Class | New | Changed | Moved | Same | Removed | Biggest change |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | 35 | 2 | 5 | 10 | Rage comes from your weapon speed, crits with basic attacks give 100% more Rage, and every Warrior trains Victory Rush at 20. | |
| 18 | 23 | 4 | 5 | 12 | Holy Strike at 6 is a new weapon strike, Judgement no longer uses up your Seal, and Seal of Fury taunts. | |
| 15 | 24 | 3 | 8 | 11 | Aimed Shot is trained at 20 and shares its cooldown with Multi-Shot, your shots no longer delay Auto Shot, and pets grow with your own stats. | |
| 9 | 31 | 2 | 11 | 7 | Combo points stay on your target when you switch, Sap no longer breaks Stealth, and Energy refills smoothly. | |
| 14 | 30 | 3 | 5 | 9 | Every Priest learns Fear Ward and Devouring Plague at 20, and each race gets its own Priest spells from class quests at 10 and 20. | |
| 12 | 30 | 2 | 6 | 8 | Call of the Elements drops up to four totems at once from 20, Fire Nova is a spell at 12, and Two-Handed Axes and Maces need no talent. | |
| 7 | 35 | 4 | 9 | 1 | Ice Lance and Arcane Blast are new talents, and Comprehension is a skill only Mages have. | |
| 17 | 30 | 3 | 2 | 15 | Curse of Agony and Curse of Doom are Banes now, so a target carries one Bane and one Curse, and damage over time can crit. | |
| 15 | 33 | 2 | 2 | 9 | Bear and Cat Form grow with your weapon, shifting for Energy (powershifting) is gone, and Entangling Roots works indoors. | |
| All nine | 117 | 271 | 25 | 53 | 82 | See every change in the talent calculator |
Talent counts: Forever beta build 1.60.1.70450 against the Classic Era trees, 466 talents in the nine Forever trees. The beta these changes come from runs until October 23, and we recount every class with the launch build after November 4.
Races: Skyborne and six new pairs
Skyborne are a new race that picks Horde or Alliance when you create the character. Both sides play Warrior, Hunter, Rogue and Druid, the Horde adds Shaman and the Alliance adds Mage.
They start on Zephras Isle and quest there from level 1 to 12.
Blizzard lists the Skyborne race and the Zephras Isle start as part of all three upgrade packs.
Skyborne ride Galestriders and learn their own Galestrider Riding for them.
Racials were rebuilt for every race. Since October 16 Ruthless replaces Sword Specialization for Humans with 2% crit, Earth Fury replaces Mace Specialization for Dwarves and Savage replaces Axe Specialization for Orcs.

Zones and quests
Riverglades is a new zone with more than 150 new quests, for levels 36–44 in the client.
Shen’dralas is new, and Mount Hyjal comes back revamped. All of it lies on the way to 60. If you would rather reach the new zones without the levels before them, a WoW Forever level boost plays your character up to them.
9 new dungeons, 35 in total
All 26 Classic dungeons stay, and 9 new ones fill the road from level 13 to 60. Blizzard gave their level ranges on October 20.
Every dungeon drop was looked at again: hundreds of new drops, unique boss items are Rare quality now, and dungeon set bonuses got better.
Raids: three on December 9
The other Classic raids, from Molten Core to Naxxramas, are not announced for Forever yet. Blizzard’s roadmap adds two new raids in spring 2027, then a revamped iconic raid and one more new raid in summer 2027.
Professions and Camping
Camping is new. The Cooking Fire becomes a basic campfire, and every profession builds three camp objects, the first at skill 20. Blueprints for them drop from dungeon bosses, and sitting at a camp until you are rested gives buffs for one hour.
Crafted food can give a small XP bonus.
| Profession | New recipes | Changed | All recipes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 71 | 39 | 179 | |
| 203 | 8 | 437 | |
| 283 | 1 | 524 | |
| 186 | 4 | 417 | |
| 63 | 72 | 216 | |
| 81 | 2 | 245 | |
| 44 | 1 | 126 | |
| 17 | 0 | 30 | |
| Total | 948 | 127 | 2,174 |
Blizzard speaks of over 600 new recipes. The client data holds 948 new recipe rows, because it counts every rank and variant on its own, so the table shows where the new recipes sit rather than an official total.
Realms become rulesets
The rulesets are Normal, PvP and Roleplaying, and Hardcore joins after launch.
Character names have two parts and are unique per region.
On the PvP ruleset all your characters belong to one faction.
You cannot group across rulesets, but battlegrounds mix them, except Hardcore.
PvP: honor ranks and Darkspear Islands
In Classic your rank came from your weekly standing against everyone else on the realm, and it dropped once you stopped playing.
Forever has 14 fixed ranks. Rank 14 opens no earlier than week 10 of a season.
Honor is a separate currency for gear, capped at 25,000 since October 1, and battlegrounds pay Honor more evenly than before.
Ranks pay out as you climb: the PvP trinket at rank 2, the battle standard at 7, seals for epic gear from 8, the black war mounts at 11 and the epic weapons at 14.
Darkspear Islands is a new battleground for 15 against 15 with control points and a flag. It queues from level 30, and a side wins at 2,000 resources.
No rated PvP and no arenas are announced.
Whether ranks decay when you stop playing: Blizzard has not said yet. We add it here as soon as they do.
Legacy System and Legacy Challenges
65 challenges, 1 point each
- 27Classes
- 18Tradeskills
- 12PvP
- 3Dungeons
- 3Raids
- 2Adventure
Every Legacy Challenge pays 1 Legacy Point. Points belong to your account, and each character spends up to 16 of them on perks.
One character alone can reach 29 points, the rest come from other classes and professions.
The perks sit in three trees: Professions, Adventure and Resourcefulness.
Hardcore challenges count on every ruleset, the others do not count in Hardcore, and 12 Hardcore challenges replace the PvP ones there.
Riding, mounts and transmog
Apprentice Riding at level 40 costs 100 gold in the client, Journeyman Riding at 60 costs 1,000 gold, and you get the mount with it.
In Classic the first riding skill alone cost 20 gold, and the mount came on top from a vendor.
Transmog is opt-in: you set it up at a transmogrifier and can switch the whole system off. It keeps the armor type, plate to plate, and Poor and Common items unlock when you loot them.
Interface and quality of life
- Group Finder (Looking For Group)
Meeting Stones no longer summon, they open a Group Finder listing, and a listing can set a voice chat mode.
- Edit Mode
Move and resize every part of the default interface.
- Cooldown Manager
Shows your key cooldowns and buffs, off by default, open it with /cdm.
- Damage Meter
Blizzard’s own meter for damage, healing and actions.
- Swing Timer
Bars for your main hand, off hand and ranged swings.
- Objective Tracker
Shows the level and the type of every quest you track.
- Combine Bags
One bag window instead of separate bags.
- Gamepad support (Alpha)
Controller support, still in alpha.
At your first login you pick the Classic or the Enhanced preset. In the beta client Enhanced turns on HD models, quest markers on the map, one combined bag and transmog, Classic starts with the old look. You can switch later.
HD and SD character models are both in, and the HD models get the old Classic animations back.
Addons: what still works
Addons stay part of the game for your own look, and a full Classic look is left to addons.
Forever runs the modern addon API, so addons made for Classic Era need a new version.
In fights the addon limits of modern WoW apply: no addons that do the math for you.
In the beta addons cannot read the combat log, so meters take their numbers from Blizzard’s damage meter.

Forever vs Classic FAQ
What is the difference between WoW Forever and Classic?
WoW Forever keeps Classic’s level 60 cap and its world without flying or level scaling, then rebuilds almost everything around it. Every class has new talent trees, the Skyborne race and six new race and class pairs arrive, 9 new dungeons join the 26 from Classic and three raids open on December 9. Rulesets replace realms, Legacy Challenges add progress for your whole account and the interface is modern.
Is WoW Forever Classic Plus?
Blizzard calls it World of Warcraft: Forever, not Classic Plus. It is close to what players asked for under that name, though: the level 60 game with new zones, dungeons, raids and class changes on top.
Are the talents different in WoW Forever?
Yes. In beta build 1.60.1.70450 117 of the 466 talents are new, 271 changed and 25 moved, and 82 Classic talents are gone. The trees keep their rows and the milestones at 11, 21 and 31 points and add one at 16 points. The talent calculator marks every change.
Which new race and class combinations does WoW Forever have?
Six for the old races: Gnome Priest, Human Hunter, Dwarf Shaman, Orc Mage, Troll Warlock and Undead Paladin. The new Skyborne race plays Warrior, Hunter, Rogue and Druid on both sides, plus Shaman for the Horde and Mage for the Alliance.
Should I pick the Classic or the Enhanced preset?
Pick the look you want to play with, you can switch later. In the beta client Enhanced turns on HD models, quest markers on the map, one combined bag and transmog. Classic starts with the old look and leaves those off.
Does WoW Forever look different from Classic?
Only if you want it to. Forever has both the HD and the SD character models, and the HD models get the old Classic animations back. The preset at your first login decides which look you start with.
Are there flying mounts or level scaling in WoW Forever?
No. Blizzard has said Forever has no flying mounts and no level scaling, so every zone keeps its fixed level range like in Classic.
What changes for professions in WoW Forever?
Blizzard adds over 600 new recipes across the professions and level ranges, and Camping is new: every profession builds camp objects from skill 20 that give buffs for one hour when you rest at them. Crafted food can also give a small XP bonus.
