Strike from the shadows, stun your target and finish it fast.
You play a melee fighter who sneaks up in Stealth, builds combo points with quick strikes and spends them on finishers like Eviscerate. Your damage comes in bursts, and stuns, Kick and Sap let you decide how a fight goes. Rogues fill the damage role in groups and are at home in world PvP.
Best to level: CombatCombat gives you the smoothest start: Sinister Strike and Eviscerate from level 1, Riposte in your early 20s and Blade Flurry at 30 for fighting several mobs at once. Also good: Assassination.

Damage
Combat keeps it simple: you build with Sinister Strike, keep Slice and Dice up and let your weapon swings do a lot of the work. Riposte, Blade Flurry and Adrenaline Rush make it the easiest Rogue to level and the one that handles several mobs at once.
Damage
Subtlety plays from Stealth with strong openers, Premeditation and Preparation, and in Forever it also builds around Rupture with Hemorrhage and Thousand Cuts. It is the usual PvP pick but takes the longest to come online while leveling.

Level 60 is not open in the beta yet, so these builds can still change. Builds as published on wowforeverbuilds.com.
Rare and epic armor (Leather) and weapons you can use, dungeon by dungeon by level. Armor and weapon types as in Classic.
Seen in the beta, unless it says otherwise.
Your combo points stay on your target when you switch to another enemy, so you can Kick a caster and go straight back. They only reset once you start building points on the new target.
Sap no longer pulls you out of Stealth. You can Sap one humanoid and then pick your fight or sneak past.
Energy refills smoothly instead of in ticks, so the strike and finisher rhythm feels more fluid.
You can train One-Handed Axes now. The Combat talent Hack and Slash replaces the old weapon specializations with one bonus per weapon type: extra swings for swords and axes, more critical hits for daggers and fist weapons, armor penetration for maces.
Every tree got new tools. Assassination gains Mutilate (daggers in both hands) and the Venom finisher, and Subtlety is rebuilt around Rupture with Hemorrhage, Cutthroat and Thousand Cuts. Most of these unlock between levels 30 and 40.

Damage. Assassination: damage. Combat: damage. Subtlety: damage.
Combat. Blade Flurry hits a second target for free and the builder and finisher loop needs no positioning tricks, the most reliable Rogue spec in a group.
Subtlety. Stealth openers, Premeditation and Preparation give you the control and the escape tools that open world and battleground fights reward most.
For example Combat at level 60: open with Sinister Strike, Slice and Dice, Adrenaline Rush, Blade Flurry. Then your main buttons are Slice and Dice, Eviscerate and Sinister Strike. The Rotation Trainer shows every button with the reason behind it and lets you play it yourself.
Combat Swords, Combat PvP, Mutilate Assassination, Assassination Burst PvP, Hemorrhage Subtlety and Preparation Subtlety PvP. Each one opens in the talent calculator with one click. Level 60 is not open in the beta yet, so these builds can still change.
The Rogue is medium to start with. The builder and finisher loop is easy to learn, but the first levels feel slow until your stuns arrive, and you rely on Stealth, positioning and crowd control.
Leather. Armor types as in Classic.
