Shaman

Fight with lightning, a big weapon or healing waters, backed by totems.

You are a hybrid who can swing a big weapon, throw lightning from range or heal, and your totems buff the group or hurt enemies around them. While leveling you mostly fight in melee with shocks and heal yourself when a fight gets close. Groups value you for totems, a spare heal and flexible damage.

The three specs

Best to level: EnhancementEnhancement mixes weapon hits with shocks and quick self-heals, and early talents like Mental Dexterity and Improved Ghost Wolf add damage and speed up travel. Also good: Elemental.

Elemental

Damage

You stand back and cast Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning and Flame Shock, with Fire Nova for groups of enemies and Lava Burst from level 40. It levels slowly before your late 30s, so most players switch to it later.

Enhancement

Damage

You fight in melee with an imbued weapon and weave in shocks and quick heals. Stormstrike from about level 25 boosts your next Earth Shock or Lightning Bolt, and later Maelstrom Weapon turns your swings into faster, cheaper Lightning Bolts.

Restoration

Healer

You heal with Healing Wave and Lesser Healing Wave, add Chain Heal at 40 and keep your group topped up with totems. Riptide, the new top talent, is an instant heal that also makes Chain Heal stronger on that target.

What is new for the Shaman in Forever

Seen in the beta, unless it says otherwise.

  • Totems are far less work. Call of the Elements drops up to four totems in one cast from level 20, Totemic Recall picks them up for some mana back, and Totemic Projection moves them up to 30 yards from level 22.

  • Fire Nova is now a spell you learn at 12 instead of a totem. It blasts every enemy near your active Fire totem and hits hard against packs.

  • Buff totems like Strength of Earth and Stoneskin now last 5 minutes and reach 30 yards, and weapon imbues like Rockbiter Weapon last a full hour.

  • Early talents fix old pain points: Mental Dexterity turns your Intellect into attack power, Mindfulness keeps some mana regeneration going while you cast, and Improved Ghost Wolf makes Ghost Wolf instant and usable indoors.

  • Each spec gets a new top talent: Lava Burst for Elemental, Rage of the Farseer for Enhancement and Riptide for Restoration. Stormstrike moves up the tree with a shorter cooldown, and Maelstrom Weapon speeds up your Lightning Bolts.

    Not tested yet
  • Lightning Bolt and Chain Lightning cast faster than before, but their base damage is lower and more spell power comes from gear, so early casting feels weak without it.
