Mage rotation in WoW Forever
5 Mage fights in the trainer: Frost at level 20, Fire at level 20, Frost at level 60, Fire at level 60 and Arcane at level 60.
ManaMana is the long game. Keep your damage over time effects ticking, use your big cooldowns on time and fill the gaps with your cheapest spell.
Pyroblast before the pull lands: your biggest hit plus a burn.
Fire Blast on cooldown, an instant hit every 8 seconds.
Shoot: Wand when mana gets tight: steady damage for free once you stand still for half a second.
Fireball as your main spell, it adds a small burn on top.
Tips
Improved Fire Blast sits in the third row at launch, so your Talent Path takes it right after 20. At 2 points it cuts the cooldown of Fire Blast by 2 seconds and adds 15 yards of range, so it also works as a long range pull.
Spell power does not raise wand damage in the beta, so pick your wand by its own damage.
Pyroblast at 20 needs a near pure Fire build. Otherwise it comes a little later.
Fingers of Frost or a freeze: Ice Lance hits as if the target were frozen, 300% more. Its 8 sec cooldown means one Ice Lance per proc, never two in a row.
Frost Nova for a sure freeze when no Fingers of Frost charge is up.
Frostbolt as your filler. Its chill is what feeds Fingers of Frost.
Tips
Cast Ice Barrier before the pull and again every minute: 15% more Frost damage for 1 min and another 5% while the shield holds. This fight starts with it up.
Cold Snap resets your other Frost cooldowns. Save it for when you need Ice Barrier or Frost Nova again.
Winter's Chill only stacks from Frostbolt and Ice Lance with Fingers of Frost, never from Blizzard, and each stack gives your next Cone of Cold 20% more damage. It only powers Cone of Cold, so this fight leaves it out.
Scorch until Improved Scorch has 5 stacks, and again before it runs out.
Heating Up stacks: each one cuts Pyroblast's cast by 25%. At 2 or 3, or before it runs out, fire it.
Fire Blast on cooldown: every cast builds a Heating Up stack, a crit builds two.
Fireball as your filler, its crits build Heating Up.
Tips
Ignite and Improved Scorch only boost your own damage in Forever. No more raid-wide Ignite with other Mages.
Combustion stacks 10% Fire crit chance with every Fire hit until three of your Fire spells have crit. Save it for when Improved Scorch is stacked.
Fire scales hard with gear and crit, so it gets much stronger as your gear improves.
Fire Power adds 3% Fire damage for each of your Fire effects on the target, Ignite, Improved Scorch and the burns of Fireball and Pyroblast, up to 12%. Keep them rolling.
Shoot: Wand when the mana is gone. Stand still for half a second and it fires, for free while your mana comes back.
Arcane Blast to 2 stacks: each stack gives you 12% of your Intellect as spell damage for 18 seconds from the first one, but makes the next Arcane Blast 100% pricier.
Missile Barrage: Arcane Missiles is free and fires twice as fast right now. Spend it while the stacks are up.
Arcane Wrath on cooldown while the stacks are up: a Fireball sized hit that also counts 5% of your maximum mana as spell damage.
Arcane Missiles fills the rest of the window. When the stacks run out, start over with Arcane Blast.
Tips
Arcane Power adds 30% damage for 30% more mana cost. Line it up with a full stack of Arcane Blast.
Stacks get expensive fast: the third Arcane Blast costs 3 times the first, the fourth 4 times. Go to 3 or 4 only for a short burst.
Arcane is the most mana-hungry spec. It shines on fights with breaks to drink.
For example Frost at level 60: open with Frostbolt, Frost Nova, Ice Lance, Frostbolt, then mostly Ice Lance, Frost Nova and Frostbolt. The trainer shows every button with the reason behind it.
How do you play a Mage at level 20?
Frost at level 20: open with Frostbolt, Frost Nova, Ice Lance, Frostbolt, then Ice Lance, Frost Nova and Frostbolt.
How does the Rotation Trainer work?
A training dummy with endless health. You play it yourself with the mouse, by tapping or on your own keys. With Autoplay the priority list presses the buttons and explains each one.
Can I play the rotation myself?
Yes, that is how the trainer starts. The glowing button is your first press, tips show the next one after that, and a comparison measures your damage against the priority list.
Which fights can I practise as a Mage?
Frost at level 20, Fire at level 20, Frost at level 60, Fire at level 60 and Arcane at level 60.
What resource does the Mage use?
Mana. The trainer shows live how it changes with every button.
Why a training dummy and not a boss?
The dummy never dies, so you practise the rotation without time pressure and see every step. Effects that need a kill stay dark here.
Is there a button for the end of a fight?
The Mage has no execute button in these fights, the rotation stays the same to the end.
Are the numbers in the trainer exact?
Costs, cooldowns and effects of the buttons come from Forever. The damage is a rounded example, and the level 60 values come from the data of the launch client.
Which gear and talents does the trainer assume?
Frost at level 20: Staff and wand, about 25 spell power, your Talent Path talents at 20 with Ice Lance. Frost at level 60: Staff, about 400 spell power, the Frost PvE build with Fingers of Frost and Ice Barrier.
