Overview

Inside Scarlet Monastery: Cathedral

The monastery once served Lordaeron's priesthood as a place of study and worship. The Scourge's arrival during the Third War changed that purpose. The Scarlet Crusade turned it into a stronghold, treating outsiders as potential plague carriers and rejecting non-human races regardless of which side they fought for.

The Cathedral sits at the heart of the Crusade's faith and military leadership. Its commanders have devoted warriors at their backs, but the order's certainty hides corruption within its own ranks. In Classic, this is the toughest of the monastery's four wings, making it a demanding stop during the later stretch of monastery leveling.

Getting there

Head to the Scarlet Monastery complex at Whispering Gardens in Tirisfal Glades, in the Eastern Kingdoms. Your destination is the Cathedral wing.

High Inquisitor Fairbanks is the hidden witness to corruption within the Crusade's leadership. In Classic, he is an undead boss tucked away in a secret chamber inside the Cathedral.

Abilities

  • Curse of Blood · Increases the Physical damage taken by an enemy by 1 for 10 min.
  • Sleep · Puts nearby enemies to sleep for up to 10 sec. Any damage caused will awaken them.
  • Power Word: Shield · Wraps the caster in a shield that lasts up to 30 sec., absorbing a maximum of 6857 Physical or magical damage. While the shield holds, spells will not be interrupted by Physical attacks.
  • Heal · Calls upon Holy magic to heal an ally.
  • Fear · Strikes fear in an enemy, causing it to flee in terror for up to 8 sec. Only 1 target can be feared at a time.
  • Dispel Magic · Dispels magic on the target, removing 1 harmful spell from an ally or 1 beneficial spell from an enemy.

Tactics

  • Interrupt Heal rather than letting him recover health while the group works through his defenses.
  • Power Word: Shield prevents physical hits from delaying his casts, so use a proper interrupt rather than relying on attack pressure.
  • Remove Curse of Blood when practical, especially before moving on, since its increased Physical damage taken lasts 10 minutes.

Tank

Fight with cleared space behind the group so Fear is less likely to send someone running into trash.

Healer

Be ready to recover the group when Sleep ends, since nearby players can lose up to 10 seconds of action.

Damage

Watch for Dispel Magic stripping a beneficial spell from you rather than assuming your buffs will stay active.

Notable loot

Scarlet Commander Mograine

2Boss 2 of 3

Scarlet Commander Mograine

BossLevel 42

4 abilities5 loot items

Scarlet Commander Mograine is the elite paladin commanding the Crusade's military forces from the Crusader's Chapel.

Abilities

  • Retribution Aura · Causes 3 Holy damage to any creature that strikes a nearby party member. Players may only have one aura on them per paladin at any one time. The aura lasts until cancelled.
  • Lay on Hands
  • Crusader Strike · Inflicts 50 damage to an enemy and increases the Holy damage it takes by 20 per Crusader Strike. Can be applied up to 5 times. Lasts 30 sec.
  • Forbearance

Tactics

  • In Classic, engaging Mograine brings uncleared chapel trash into the fight, so clear every corner before pulling him.
  • Crusader Strike increases the target's Holy damage taken, stacking up to five times and lasting 30 seconds.

Tank

Save defensive cooldowns for the rising pressure as Crusader Strike stacks build.

Healer

Watch the attackers as well as the tank, since Retribution Aura returns Holy damage when they strike.

Damage

Avoid spending every damage cooldown on the opening phase of the finale.

Notable loot

High Inquisitor Whitemane

3Boss 3 of 3Final boss

High Inquisitor Whitemane

BossLevel 42

6 abilities1 loot item

High Inquisitor Whitemane turns the finale into a two-boss fight. In Classic, she enters after Mograine falls, then sleeps the group around half health and resurrects him.

Abilities

  • Scarlet Resurrection
  • Deep Sleep · Puts nearby enemies to sleep for up to 10 sec. Any damage caused will awaken them.
  • Holy Smite · Smites an enemy, inflicting Holy damage.
  • Heal · Calls upon Holy magic to heal an ally.
  • Dominate Mind · Takes control of a humanoid enemy up to level 25 for 15 sec.
  • Power Word: Shield · Wraps an ally in a shield that lasts up to 30 sec., absorbing a maximum of 1809 Physical or magical damage. While the shield holds, spells will not be interrupted by Physical attacks.

Tactics

  • Focus Whitemane first once both bosses are active, removing the healer from the encounter.
  • Dispel Power Word: Shield if you can, rather than spending damage breaking through its absorption.
  • Dominate Mind only affects humanoids up to level 25, so it does not threaten players within this dungeon's tuned range.

Tank

Pick Mograine back up after the resurrection and keep both bosses off the group.

Healer

Top up players before Deep Sleep can stop nearby enemies from acting for up to 10 seconds.

Damage

Prioritize kicking Heal over Holy Smite when choosing which cast to stop.

Before you go

Before you go

  • Allow about 25-40 minutes for a full clear.
  • In Classic, patrolling trash respawns while stationary cathedral packs stay dead, so watch cleared routes for returning pats.
  • Level 60 players of either faction can also check Forgiveness and The Lonely Path of the Damned before arranging a monastery visit.
