Overview

Inside Upper Blackrock Spire

Rend Blackhand's Dark Horde holds this stronghold under Nefarian's influence. Orcs and dragonkin defend its halls, bringing the two forces together at the heart of Blackrock power. Rend considers himself the rightful Warchief through his father's bloodline, and his alliance with Nefarian supports their work on the chromatic dragonflight.

The spire's named chambers include Dragonspire Hall, the Hall of Binding, the Rookery and Blackrock Stadium. Beyond the fighting, this is also a base for Nefarian's campaign against the Dark Iron dwarves deeper in the mountain. At the top end of leveling, the run puts players directly against the commanders behind that struggle.

Getting there

Head to Blackrock Mountain in the Eastern Kingdoms. Upper Blackrock Spire is inside the Blackrock Spire complex.

Level 59–60 is the range the dungeon is tuned for, not a minimum entry level. This is the Forever level range as it stands today. It can still shift before launch.

Pyroguard Emberseer

Boss

3 abilities2 loot items

Pyroguard Emberseer is a captive fire elemental. In Classic, defeating his Blackhand Incarcerators freed him, and killing him opened passage farther into the spire.

Abilities

Tactics

  • Keep ranged players away from Emberseer so Fire Nova does not hit them.
  • Flame Buffet increases the Fire damage its target takes for 45 seconds, making later Fire hits more dangerous.

Tank

Hold Emberseer in place so ranged players can maintain their distance.

Healer

Give the Flame Buffet target extra attention before the next Fire hit lands.

Notable loot

Solakar Flamewreath

2Boss 2 of 8

Solakar Flamewreath

BossLevel 60

1 ability2 loot items

In Classic, Solakar Flamewreath ends the optional Father Flame event, started by looting the crystal on the left side of the Rookery. Five waves of two dragonkin lead into his arrival.

Abilities

  • War Stomp · Inflicts normal damage plus 50 to nearby enemies, knocking them back and stunning them for 5 sec.

Tactics

  • Clear the dragonspawn already in the room before activating Father Flame.
  • Keep the group together during the waves to limit line of sight problems and make AoE effective.
  • Kill Rookery Hatchers before Rookery Guardians.
  • Avoid walking close to eggs, which hatch whelps that can overwhelm the group.

Tank

Position Solakar with room behind you, since War Stomp knocks nearby enemies back.

Healer

Stay outside the nearby War Stomp area so its 5-second stun does not stop your healing.

Damage

Switch to loose whelps promptly before their numbers build up.

Notable loot

Goraluk Anvilcrack

3Boss 3 of 8

Goraluk Anvilcrack

BossLevel 61

3 abilities8 loot items

Goraluk Anvilcrack is a Blackrock orc blacksmith whose attacks combine increased melee damage, a short stun and reduced Stamina.

Abilities

  • Backhand · Backhands an enemy, stunning it for 2 sec.
  • Strike · Strikes at an enemy, inflicting increased melee damage.
  • Head Crack · Reduces an enemy's Stamina by 18 for 20 sec.

Tactics

  • Keep Goraluk on a tank, since Strike deals increased melee damage.
  • Backhand stuns its target for 2 seconds, so do not rely on that player to act during the stun.

Healer

Head Crack lowers its target's Stamina for 20 seconds, so watch the reduced health buffer.

Notable loot

Gyth

4Boss 4 of 8

Gyth

BossLevel 62

5 abilities3 loot items

Gyth is Rend Blackhand's chromatic drake mount. His frontal attacks combine Fire damage, Frost damage and an armor-reducing acid breath.

Abilities

  • Knock Away · Inflicts normal damage plus 30 to an enemy and knocks it back.
  • Summon Rend Blackhand
  • Freeze · Sends out an ice blast that stuns and damages enemies in a cone in front of the caster, then inflicts additional Frost damage every 3 sec. for 10 sec.
  • Corrosive Acid Breath · Shoots a cloud of acidic breath at enemies in a cone in front of the caster, reducing their armor and inflicting Nature damage every 5 sec. for 30 sec.
  • Flame Breath · Inflicts 507 Fire damage to enemies in a cone in front of the caster.

Tactics

  • Keep everyone except the tank out of Gyth's front to avoid Flame Breath, Freeze and Corrosive Acid Breath.
  • Freeze also stuns and leaves continuing Frost damage, so an initial hit is not the end of the danger.
  • In Classic, Rend dismounted during this encounter and fought on foot, so be ready to handle him separately.

Tank

Choose a position where Knock Away will not send you far from Gyth.

Healer

Corrosive Acid Breath leaves Nature damage and reduced armor for 30 seconds, adding pressure to the affected tank.

Notable loot

Warchief Rend Blackhand

5Boss 5 of 8

Warchief Rend Blackhand

Boss

4 abilities2 loot items

Warchief Rend Blackhand is a physical damage fight with a dangerous Enrage and a healing-reducing Mortal Strike.

Abilities

  • Enrage · Increases the caster's attack speed by 60% and the Physical damage it deals by 50 for 2 min.
  • Whirlwind · Attacks nearby enemies in a whirlwind of steel that lasts 2 sec. and inflicts normal damage plus 300.
  • Mortal Strike · Inflicts 300% weapon damage and leaves the target wounded, reducing the effectiveness of any healing by 50% for 5 sec.
  • Cleave · Inflicts weapon damage plus 30 to an enemy and its nearest allies, affecting up to 3 targets.

Tactics

  • Move out of nearby melee range during Whirlwind, which lasts 2 seconds.
  • Do not stack beside Rend's current target, since Cleave can hit that player and nearby allies.

Tank

Save defensive tools for Enrage, which increases Rend's attack speed and Physical damage.

Healer

Mortal Strike deals a heavy hit and cuts healing effectiveness for 5 seconds, so keep the tank healthy before it lands.

Notable loot

The Beast

6Boss 6 of 8

The Beast

Boss

The Beast is a core hound guarding the Furnace after being captured and retrained by Nefarian's forces.

Tactics

  • In Classic, multiple tanks helped maintain control through Terrifying Roar and Berserker Charge.
  • Stop attacking if tank control breaks rather than keeping the Beast on a damage dealer.

Healer

React quickly if a cloth wearer gets aggro, since the Beast's heavy melee hits can kill them within a few swings.

General Drakkisath

7Boss 7 of 8Final boss

General Drakkisath

Boss

1 ability8 loot items

General Drakkisath commands Nefarian's dragonspawn armies from his throne room. His nearby Thunderclap slows movement and attacks.

Abilities

  • Thunderclap · Inflicts 75 Nature damage to nearby enemies, increasing the time between their attacks by 33% and slowing their movement by 40% for 10 sec.

Tactics

  • In Classic, the standard approach was to kite Drakkisath away while killing his two Chromatic Elite Guards, then use two tanks to cover Conflagration.
  • Assign the kiter before the pull and agree on a route across the bridge toward the Beast's lair or Rend's room.
  • Have the kiter drop aggro only once the guards are dead and the tanks are ready for Drakkisath's return.
  • Keep other players away from a Conflagration victim, who damages nearby allies while confused.

Tank

Keep both tanks above the rest of the group on threat so Drakkisath has a safe target when Conflagration disables one.

Healer

Continue healing the Conflagration victim while covering the tank who takes over.

Damage

Ranged players should stay outside Thunderclap's nearby area rather than accepting unnecessary damage and slows.

8Boss 8 of 8Rare spawn

Jed Runewatcher

Rare spawnLevel 59

3 abilities

Jed Runewatcher is a rare Blackhand Legion orc who can wander in Goraluk Anvilcrack's room or the Furnace.

Abilities

  • Shield Bash · Bashes an enemy with the caster's shield, inflicting Physical damage and interrupting the spell being cast for 8 sec.
  • Strike · Strikes at an enemy, inflicting increased melee damage.
  • Shield Charge · Charges an enemy, knocking it back and inflicting normal damage plus 150.

Tactics

  • Keep casters out of melee range so Shield Bash does not interrupt their spells for 8 seconds.
  • Leave space for Shield Charge's knockback and avoid positioning where it could push you toward another enemy.

Tank

Reposition Jed after a charge so the group has a stable target again.

Healer

Watch for increased melee damage from Strike between Jed's disruptive attacks.

Before you go

Before you go

  • Leave enough timeA full clear takes about 60-90 minutes. Set aside the whole window rather than planning around a quick boss kill.
  • Build for a larger runThe stronghold traditionally calls for a larger, raid-like party. Organize your roster around that scale rather than treating it as a small leveling dungeon.
  • Agree on the endpointA Rend run stops after Warchief Rend Blackhand. Make sure everyone knows whether the group is doing that shorter route or continuing to the end.
  • Do not try to clear all the Rookery eggs beforehand. They respawn quickly, so that does not make the event area permanently safe.
  • Stealth does not prevent Rookery eggs from hatching. A stealthed activator can avoid gaining the whelps' aggro, allowing them to despawn.
  • In Classic, /target Jed Runewatcher could detect him from the entrance when he was in Goraluk's room, but a Furnace spawn required checking again past Blackrock Stadium.
