Upper Blackrock Spire Dungeon Guide

Upper Blackrock Spire, UBRS for short, is the upper half of the spire at the top of Blackrock Mountain, where Rend Blackhand's orcs and General Drakkisath's black dragonkin rule, a Classic dungeon for levels 59–60 with eight bosses. Here is the key, the group size, the Rookery and Rend events, all 18 quests, every boss with its Classic tactics and the loot Forever already lists.

Inside Upper Blackrock Spire

Upper Blackrock Spire sits behind a sealed door inside the lower spire. Past it come the rune rooms of Dragonspire Hall, Pyroguard Emberseer bound in the Hall of Binding, the egg chamber of the Rookery with Father Flame and Solakar Flamewreath, Goraluk Anvilcrack in the Hall of Blackhand, Warchief Rend Blackhand and his dragon Gyth in Blackrock Stadium, The Beast in the Furnace and General Drakkisath on the Spire Throne.

In Classic the sealed door opens with the Seal of Ascension, which you earn in Lower Blackrock Spire. UBRS is also where both Onyxia chains end at General Drakkisath, where Drakkisath's Brand gives the Mark of Drakkisath for Blackwing Lair, and where Drakkisath drops the nine Dungeon Set 1 chests.

Lower and Upper Blackrock Spire are one map in Forever, so the door, the portal and the Group Finder level of 53 are the same for both. The bosses are level 59–62. Nobody has been inside on the beta yet, and every tactic below is the Classic one.

Level 59–60 is the range the dungeon is tuned for, not a minimum entry level. This is the Forever level range as it stands today. It can still shift before launch.

Upper Blackrock Spire is not open on the WoW Forever beta. Blizzard's notes of October 1 raised the cap to 30 and list the dungeons you can enter, and no Blackrock Mountain dungeon is on that list. Until the beta gets here, the tactics and the route on this page are the Classic ones. The day it opens we add what the first runs show.

What is different from the Classic version you may know. Everything else works as it did in Classic.

35 Classic boss drops, the Chromatic Carapace, the Blackblade of Shahram and Finkle's Skinner among them, plus several quest rewards such as Mark of Tyranny, Eye of the Beast and Blackhand's Breadth, are not in the Forever item database yet. The items still exist in the game files, so this is a gap in the data, not a removal. This guide adds them the day the dungeon opens.

Location

Where is Upper Blackrock Spire? Entrance and how to get there

Upper Blackrock Spire has no portal of its own. Take the Blackrock Spire portal at the top of Blackrock Mountain, at about 33.0, 25.2 on the Burning Steppes map, and the sealed door to the upper spire is inside, above the start of the lower spire. Walk into the mountain from Searing Gorge or Burning Steppes and follow the chains up.

1Fly to Thorium Point in Searing Gorge, the gryphon master stands at about 37.9, 30.4, and ride south into Blackrock Mountain.
2Inside, follow the chains up to the portal at the top, then head for the sealed door near the start of the lower spire.
3Morgan's Vigil in Burning Steppes (about 84.4, 68.3) is where Marshal Maxwell and Mayara Brightwing give the Alliance UBRS quests.

Group Finder

The Group Finder lists Upper Blackrock Spire at level 53, the same as Lower. A warlock can summon latecomers right at the top of the mountain.

After a wipe

In Classic a wipe sends you to the Spirit Healer at Thorium Point in Searing Gorge, at about 35.4, 23.6, and the climb back up through the mountain and the lower spire takes a while. Where Forever sends you after a wipe nobody has reported yet.

Tactics

In Classic you kill the Incarcerators around him, and he breaks free.
Fire Nova hits everyone near him, and Flame Buffet makes its target take more fire damage for 45 seconds. Its numbers changed in Forever.

Tank

Pick him up as soon as he breaks free.

Healer

Watch the group, Flame Buffet stacks up.

Damage

Incarcerators first, then Emberseer.

The eggs hatch whelps when someone walks close, so the group stays together in the middle of the Rookery.
War Stomp knocks back and stuns everyone near him for 5 seconds.

Tank

Hold the waves in the middle, away from the eggs.

Healer

Stay in the middle with the group.

Damage

Kill the Hatchers first, they wake the eggs.

Watch out for: Someone stepping into the eggs.

Freeze · Sends out an ice blast that stuns and damages enemies in a cone in front of the caster, then inflicts additional Frost damage every 3 sec. for 10 sec.
Corrosive Acid Breath · Shoots a cloud of acidic breath at enemies in a cone in front of the caster, reducing their armor and inflicting Nature damage every 5 sec. for 30 sec.
Flame Breath · Inflicts Fire damage to enemies in a cone in front of the caster.

Tactics

Flame Breath, Corrosive Acid Breath and Freeze go out in a cone in front of Gyth, so only the tank stands there.
Knock Away throws the tank back.
In Classic Rend jumps off during the fight and fights on foot.

Tank

Face Gyth away from everyone.

Heal the tank through the breaths.

Damage

Stay at his side or behind him.

Abilities

Enrage · Increases the caster's attack speed by 60% and the Physical damage it deals for 2 min.
Whirlwind · Attacks nearby enemies in a whirlwind of steel that lasts 2 sec. and inflicts normal damage
Mortal Strike · Inflicts 300% weapon damage and leaves the target wounded, reducing the effectiveness of any healing by 50% for 5 sec.
Cleave · Inflicts weapon damage to an enemy and its nearest allies, affecting up to 3 targets.
Thunderclap · Inflicts Nature damage to nearby enemies, increasing the time between their attacks by 100% and slowing their movement by 60% for 10 sec.

Tactics

In Classic waves of Chromatic Whelps, Chromatic Dragonspawn and Blackhand Dragon Handlers come into the arena before Rend rides in on Gyth.
Pull the waves to one side and kill the Dragon Handlers first, they heal the dragons.
On foot Rend uses Whirlwind, Mortal Strike, Cleave and Enrage, and in Classic Thunderclap.

Tank

One tank on Gyth, one on Rend once he jumps off.

Healer

Mortal Strike cuts your heals on the tank.

Damage

Melee step out of Whirlwind.

Watch out for: Running out of mana before Rend lands.

In Classic a skinner with 310 skill frees Finkle Einhorn from its corpse. In Forever his English name is Pip Quickwit.

Tank

Keep it on you no matter what, Fear Ward or a tremor helps.

Abilities

Thunderclap · Inflicts Nature damage to nearby enemies, increasing the time between their attacks by 33% and slowing their movement by 40% for 10 sec.
Cleave · Inflicts normal damage to an enemy and its nearest allies, affecting up to 5 targets.
Conflagration · Sets an enemy aflame, inflicting Fire damage over 10 sec. and sending it into a state of panic. While the target is affected, the flames periodically scorch its nearby allies for damage as well.

Tactics

In Classic a puller kites him away while the group kills the guards, then two tanks take him.
Conflagration sets a player on fire and makes him panic, and the flames burn everyone near him. Stay away from a burning player.
Thunderclap slows the group, Cleave hits up to five in front of him.
Drakkisath's Brand behind him gives the Mark of Drakkisath for Blackhand's Command.

Tank

Two tanks swap when one of them is set on fire.

Healer

Stand far from the tanks.

Damage

Kill the guards first, then stay behind him.

Most wipes here start before a boss. These are the packs and effects to respect.

Blackhand Summoners and Dreadweavers
Dragonspire Hall and the Hall of Binding. Blackhand Summoners call more Blackhand Veterans and Dreadweavers into the fight, Dreadweavers cut healing on their target by 75% with Veil of Shadow, and Veterans Shield Charge, Shield Bash and Net-o-Matic. Kill the Summoners first.
Rookery eggs and their guards
Rookery Guardians and Hatchers stand among the eggs, and Hatchers wake the eggs on purpose. Walking close hatches whelps too. Keep the group in the middle and AoE the whelps.
The Stadium waves
Chromatic Dragonspawn hit hard with Strike and Cleave, Chromatic Whelps cast Lightning Bolt, Frostbolt and Fireball Volley, and Blackhand Dragon Handlers heal the dragons with Mend Dragon. Tank the dragonspawn, kill the Handlers and AoE the whelps.
Rage Talon dragonkin
The halls toward the Spire Throne. Rage Talon Captains hit with Knock Away, Mortal Strike and Arcing Smash, Dragon Guards Shield Slam, Cleave and Sunder Armor, and Fire Tongues cast Flame Buffet. Pull them one group at a time.
Blackhand Elites, Assassins and Iron Guards
On the way to the Beast and Drakkisath. Elites Head Crack and Backhand, Assassins sneak in stealth and Backstab and Gouge whoever turns their back, and Iron Guards Shield Slam. Keep the healer close to the tank.
Chromatic Elite Guards
Drakkisath's two guards on the Spire Throne. Mortal Strike and Knockdown, which stuns up to three players for 2 seconds. Kill them while someone keeps Drakkisath away.

Upper Blackrock Spire quests

Eighteen quests lead into Upper Blackrock Spire: 5 for the Alliance, 5 for the Horde and 8 for both factions. They come from all over the map: Morgan's Vigil and Flame Crest in Burning Steppes, Winterspring, Orgrimmar, Desolace, Western Plaguelands, Stormwind and Undercity. The two Onyxia chains end here at General Drakkisath, and the Alliance chain of General Drakkisath's Command and the Horde chain of Warlord's Command come over from Lower Blackrock Spire.

Tanks look at Drakkisath's Draconian Deflector and Brigam Girdle and Gyth's Skull. Alchemists come for Recipe: Flask of the Titans and Recipe: Flask of Chromatic Resistance, leatherworkers for Pattern: Red Dragonscale Breastplate, blacksmiths for Goraluk's plans, and druids for the Book of Ferocious Bite V from The Beast.

Before you go

Sort out the Seal of AscensionIn Classic the sealed door opens for a player who carries the Seal of Ascension. Do the two Vaelan quests in Lower Blackrock Spire before your first UBRS night.
Bring a full groupRend's event, the Rookery and Drakkisath are built for more than five players in Classic. Two tanks make Gyth, Rend and Drakkisath much easier.
Bring fire resistance and fear breakersEmberseer, Gyth, The Beast and Drakkisath all deal fire damage, and The Beast's Terrifying Roar fears the whole group.

Kill the Blackhand Summoners first, every one you leave alive keeps adding Veterans and Dreadweavers.
In the Rookery stay in the middle and never walk through the eggs.
Clear the throne room before you pull Drakkisath, Blackhand and Rage Talon packs stand all around it.

Questions players ask

What level is Upper Blackrock Spire in WoW Forever?

The spire lets you in from level 50, the Group Finder lists UBRS at 53, and the bosses are level 59–62. We recommend 59–60.

Where is the Upper Blackrock Spire entrance?

Through the Blackrock Spire portal at the top of Blackrock Mountain, at about 33.0, 25.2 on the Burning Steppes map. Inside, the sealed door to the upper spire is above the start of the lower spire.

Do you need a key for UBRS, and how do you get the Seal of Ascension?

In Classic the door opens with the Seal of Ascension. Vaelan in Lower Blackrock Spire gives the two quests: bring the gemstones of Omokk, Voone and Wyrmthalak with an Unadorned Seal of Ascension, then forge the seal at Emberstrife in Dustwallow Marsh. Both quests are in Forever. Whether the door still asks for the seal, Blizzard has not said.

How many players is UBRS for in WoW Forever?

The Forever game client lets up to 10 players into Blackrock Spire, and that cap covers both wings because they are one map. In Classic UBRS was the 10-player run and LBRS a 5-player dungeon. How the Group Finder will build UBRS groups Blizzard has not said.

How many bosses are in Upper Blackrock Spire?

Eight: Pyroguard Emberseer, Solakar Flamewreath, Goraluk Anvilcrack, Gyth, Warchief Rend Blackhand, The Beast, General Drakkisath and the rare Jed Runewatcher. Dungeon Set 2 players can also summon Lord Valthalak in the Furnace.

Who is the last boss of UBRS?
